Default Tri Glide Filling Gas Tank Overfill Issues

    Gotta ask…

As we all know the fuel tank door design is not one of Milwaukee’s gems. Getting the gas nozzle into the filler neck on my 2021 Tri Glide takes some care to avoid dripping on the paint, but my question is how you all avoid overfilling the tank, even when dispensing fuel at a slow rate?

I’ve tried dispensing faster and of course experience fuel splash back… now I’ve found if I pump it too slow, the auto shutoff on the nozzle doesn’t always work as designed and I end up with fuel right to the top of the filler neck.

This even while placing the nozzle in quite a ways (below the filler neck baffle).

I’m running Kromewerks 2+2 narrow bars, and that makes positioning the nozzle even more of a challenge since they are more “in the way” if you will.

I’d love to be able to view over the top to watch the fill more closely but it’s not as easy as when I was riding two wheels and had the bike leaning on the kickstand. I can’t see inside the tank well enough until it’s too late…. And when the auto shutoff doesn’t work well either…

Any tricks or tips would be appreciated. Thanks, all!

Like squad automatics and sex - short bursts are best. Maybe a small mirror, IDK. Once I taped small mirror's to my loafers so I could look up girls skirts. Sister Mary Celeste ended that deal by wacking me up side the head with a pointer stick. Stll hurts.

I fill it on the slow side & listen to it. You can hear a difference in it as it gets near the top. As sound changes I fill even slower. Works for me.

I run the Khrome Workz two plus two bars also. I put the nozzle in the tank and put it on auto slow filll and never had a problem with the automatic shutting off. It shuts it off about 2 in from the top. So far haven't had a problem, knock on wood. I hold my hand under the nozzle when I remove it from the tank so it doesn't drip on the tank. Hold the nozzle over the fill hole for a few seconds after it stops pumping. It'll stop dripping in a second or so.

When filling the TriGlide I would turn the bars full lock to give me as much room as possible and then as Posse said listen for a change in sound.

Several years ago H-D changed the design on the filler neck. Can't recall when but my '07 CVO Ultra had the older style and no problem filling. I found the newer style to be problematic even on my two wheelers let alone the TG.

As others have said the best way I've found to fill the TG is to turn the handlebars full left to lock (I also have the 2+2 narrow sweepers) and then fill from the right side as I'm right handed. I can lean over and watch the filler neck as I slowly pump the fuel. I always fill manually as I don't trust the nozzle shut offs. And I never try to fill to the tip top as most nozzles seem to have a spot where nothing comes out until you pass that point and then its a gusher. With the tank already almost full that is a recipe for spilling fuel on the tank.

I’m in the sound group. Listen to the sound as it fills up then look down the filler neck, you can see the bubbles. I usually rock the trike a little with one leg, then add some more fuel and repeat. I don’t trust the pump to kick off.

I’m a creature of habit I will only get gasoline when I need it so when I stop to fill up I know it’s gonna take at least 5 gallons sometimes 5 1/2 gallons so I just watch the pump meter and when it reads 4 1/2 gallons or so ‘Then I just nurse in the rest …Filling a gas tank is not rocket science …🙄.

As a side note a few drops of gasoline on the tank Will not harm the paint…🤔..

I do exactly the same thing. When I had the two wheels, and the bike was tipping, I have to shake it to completely fill it. Now that the bike is straight up, it seems to fill well.

The station I usually use always had one pump for bikes - you didn't have to press the nozzle on the tank filler. They made him get rid of that, so now you have to press. Still I press and fill until it stops.

The sound approach is great… unfortunately it seems many gas stations these days pump out that video crap and “buy this” advertising at the pump which makes listening for the sound change a challenge… today’s fuel stop had music blasting over all the pump islands.

I get it, if you’re filling a car, no biggie since you use the auto shutoff.

I’ll try filling from the right side next time out as suggested as well to see if I can better see down the filler neck.

Thanks to all for your comments. 👊🏼

FWIW… filling from the right side was the trick. I can see past the filler insert enough to be able to stop the pump before it’s too late.

    Thanks,all!

I get it, if you’re filling a car, no biggie since you use the auto shutoff.

I’ll try filling from the right side next time out as suggested as well to see if I can better see down the filler neck.

Thanks to all for your comments. 👊🏼
Most places with those videos ,have a mute button. Always use it. trike since 2016 & never had a problem filling. Maybe just lucky...

I fill from the left side and keep an eye on the level while moving the bike with my right leg on the primary. Works good , but HD had made the tank fill hole deeper and longer and you have to wait for the level to go down before adding more gas. I think it sucks, but it is what it is.

Yeah, in 2014 HD changed the fill neck.

Positive is that the fuel gauge and the MTE is far more accurate than it was previously.

Negative is that if you want to get all the way full you have to bring the level up above the little black plastic piece in the neck, wiggle/shake it so it will burp and level will go down, then do it again, 3-4 times/until it stops burping and the fuel level is right at the top of the black plastic piece.
