    talking about too much oil and drag on flywheels

    you wrote Too much oil is not a good thing, it will cause extra drag on the flywheels and you will end up with oil carry over into the intake, too much oil cannot be returned to the oil pan fast enough, it will collect in the case and push out thru the breathers in the heads

    please explain

    why would the engine get more oil if there is some extra in the tank... i would think the pump will pump x amount of volume no matter how much is in the tank... and i dont see how any oil could be going to the sump by gravity..

    Without getting too technical speaking in Layman's terms;….My experiences with Harley engines is that if you put way too much oil in (overfill) the extra oil will come out the Bottom of the air cleaner and down your right paint leg until the Oil Seeks the proper level…

    If the oil in the tank is @ the full mark cold, the pump cannot push enough oil out of the crank case fast enough, some of the oil will continue to be churned by the flywheels , this can cause some cavitation of the oil pump and will stall the return to the pan

    That is 1 path for sure for oil to leak from being too full

    The biggest problem is HD has been working since 2016 on the right combo of oil pump and case oil return cavity's to get away from sumping

    Add too much oil in the tank and you now have compounded the bad JUJU that the oil pump return side cannot keep up with

    There are many more factors here to list, poor machining of cylinders, loose piston jets, weak piston jet gaskets to name a few ( these can all add in too much oil ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time)

    Many have been very lucky and not had problems, others that ride a lot @ higher RPM will continue to see moderate problems IMO

    The pump design has changed at least 4 times, but the failure of the MOCO to address the undersized oil return galleries has not solved the problem

    The MOCO is adamant about NOT running the oil level in the oil tank above the halfway point on the stick to combat this very issue

    These problems have been documented and go further back than just the introduction of the M8 engines

    My log splitter takes a quart of oil. (8hp)….And if I change the oil and refill with a full quart after the engine gets good and hot it will Spit out oil till The level go down to 3/4 full and won’t lose a drop after that..

    Harley engines are kinda like that..
