Default 2019 CSC/Goldwing rear diff failure at 8000 miles!

Went on long ride today and my trike started making weird noises, mostly when coasting like downgrade. More miles in started getting some vibration felt clear up into the handlebars. Decided I had better get this checked out, detoured off route and went to a buddy house where we could check it out. Suspected the driveshaft first but it appears to be fine. Put the rear end up on blocks with both rear tires off the ground and when you spin either side it sounds like rocks in a washing machine! Damn this is not good! Trike has right at 8100 miles on it. Now I'm gonna loose it during peak riding season and we had a 4 day ride coming up fathers day weekend with hotels booked! I'm not happy! Calling dealer in the morning to see what can be done with it.

keeping an eye on this I'm interested in what happens. I changed my differential fluid at 5000 miles and the oil that came out didn't look bad.

I changed mine at around 3000 miles and the oil looked good. We dumped the oil that was in it yesterday and while it looks ok there did seem to be a trace of "metallic" in it. I'm pretty sure it's the output shaft bearing on the left side, if you turn the axle shaft slowly while wiggling the shaft/CV joint there is loose and tight areas. I looked on the net to see if I could find a parts diagram for the diff to see if those are ball bearings or tapered bearings. I'm betting ball bearings by the early failure.

I have a video of the noise and it's horrific sounding, can't seem to post the video on here.

Gee, so sorry to hear of you having an issue with the CSC conversion. Hopefully you can get it taken care of to enjoy your planned trip. Give Will @ CSC a shout out. I am confident if you can get avideo of the sounds/visual he will provide you guidance. 5-year warranty on their kit. Hopefully you have a CSC dealer-installer near you. Do let us know what you find out.

I had my 2018 DCT Tour converted last year, I replaced the rear drive oil as recomended by CSC and the rear drive oil was dark no signs of metal. Replaced with CSC suggested oil. No issues to date.

you said something about calling your dealer what did they say? I think I would call CSC direct from what I have heard they are good to work with.

Called the dealer and while they was helpful there is no way they can provide any service in time to save my trip. The dealer also called Will at CSC and They said there has been no know issues with the rear diff's. Even though it's clearly under warranty I may attempt to dig a little deeper into it and see if possible to save my weekend, time is running short and parts may be an issue if it comes to that. I was told that if I go into it CSC want's me to take plenty of pictures on what I find as they are curious as well. The dealer suspects outboard wheel bearing/hub not the diff.

If anybody on here knows how to post that video let me know as I would like some input on it.

I had a outboard bearing go my 2008 GL 1800 CSC The wheel bearing From the dealer it a lot of money, I went to NAPA we look at 50 different bearing's and found it to be the same as 2006 chevy cavalier front bearing, was not a big deal to changed, pull the wheel , the caliper, rotor, the big nut on the axle, and three bolts on bearing , at that time the bearing was around $100.00. I can look for the part number at home later today if you want it, mine went around 6000 miles .

I tore the bike down this morning hoping to get a solution and save the ride. Well ROAD DOG, the wheel bearing/hub is indeed the problem. Once it was removed from the bike it makes a horrible grinding noise. Pretty sure it was assembled with no grease in it as there is dry black dust coming out of it! I know this is not a CSC part so no blame towards them but better quality hubs on a bike this expensive would be nice. I could easily see one of these locking up and causing some serious issues. I'm in this deep now so it only makes since to tear down and check the other side. Not leaving till AM Saturday morning so if I can get a hub I should be able to make it.

Yes its out, will post pic later. I did some research on the info you posted and it looks exactly the same. GM stopped the Cavelier in 2005 and replaced it with the Cobalt in 2006 but the 05 Cavelier is a match. My local Oriellys has on in stock for $92 with 3 year warranty. My dealer said they should reimburse parts prices.

Rode about 50 miles last night and all is good. No noise and no vibration running just as new again. Leaving in the morning for big 4 day ride, oh it's gonna be hot!
