    Default Melt down????

Went to the dealership today. Looked for some new boots. Boots wouldn't fit. No problem. Went over to the parts guy and asked him if my key switch came in. He said it was sent back to service dept. One of the tech's installed it. Fine and dandy. Out the door I went. Nice day, great ride. Stopped at a gas station to get a bottle of water. 1st. it wouldn't start in gear. Had to put in neutral to get it started. I knew something was up. Got going down the Hwy, I noticed just about every light on the dash was on. I pulled over to check for codes. Oh boy did I have codes...ECM: U0121, U2067, U2087. BCM: b2285, U0121. SPEEDO: U0121. Every one of the codes had Comm. problems with the ABS. I tried to clear them, but it wouldn't let me. Finally got home. Let the Trike sit for a while. Went outside, tried to get the codes cleared. It worked this time. This is about the 3rd. time this has happened. Not sure why this happens.

Oh, forgot some other info. Speedometer wouldn't work, Honestly Officer, I had no idea how fast I was going. Odometer wouldn't register any mileage. Lost my trip mileage for the day. Navigation was goofy, RPM was not registering correctly. Also, Gear position indicator, not showing.

I have an appointment with the dealer, Saturday. 9:00 sharp.

Wow, that is some serious bad electrical JU JU

How many times have you had it in for these problems?

If you continue to have problems you may want to get customer service involved @ the MOCO headquarters

Failure to procure new boots can lead to electrical problems. Everyone knows that. Or it could be the nut that installed the switch.

It's the switch that you can lock the forks. Fork lock and Ignition switch.

It seems that I write down the codes and see what they are, and then I clear them. They don't come back for quite a while. I'm going to make an appointment with the dealer next week.

Well, I decided to go to Sturgis, even with the issues with the trike. Heading to Sturgis, the Trike had 2 episodes of Code issues. Seemed to clear the codes right away. Got to Sturgis, everything was ok. No codes all week. Trike ran great. Well, we started home, trike was running great. Got to Chamberlin, SD. to fill the gas tank, and take on a break. The codes came back. Couldn't get them to clear. By the way it was raining. Had to start the Trike in Neutral. Heading down the road. Had no Speedometer reading, no RPM. No Cruse control. No reading on what gear I was in. Gas gauge wouldn't work. No mileage. Stopped in Mitchell, SD. to get gas. Thought I would check to see if I could clear the codes. It worked this time. Got all my readings back. Had to stop in Sioux Falls, SD for the night. Was soaking wet. Yes, I had a rain gear. They had a record rain fall for 1 day of 5.5 inches. Never had an issue the rest of the way home. I got an appointment with the dealer Aug. 19th. Getting really tired of this thing. I'm not taking the trike back, until it gets fixed.

Ok let me get this straight, you went to buy boots and then checked on your switch, ok they say it is done and installed and you take it and then all of this crap started happening how come you didn't take it back right then and there, just curious. I take it your wife/girl friend was with you in a car and they drove the car home, just curious again I guess. I know one time I picked up my softail from dealer and drove it basically 2 miles and took it back, said this isn't fixed and you said it was and you charged me, what kind of dealer are you, got it straighten out finally but had to leave the bike for another 2 days. Some dealars are good and some are not, maybe you have a bad dealer to me anyway, they aren't fixing what you bring in for. sounds like Jack said get ahold of mother ship. Surprised you went to Sturgis with these problems but oh well at least you got home ok.

    All for now Trampas

The day I went to get boots, because they had to order them. Well, they didn't fit. Backtracking. A week or two, I went into the dealer complaining that the key to the fork/ignition switch wouldn't work. They had to order that part. I had to go home and get the key # so they can order the switch. On the boot day, I checked to see if the switch came in, It was in, so they installed it while I waited. Worked fine. We continued on our ride of the day. Bike ran fine. 3 hours later we stopped at a gas station to take a break and get some water. Went to start the trike up. That's went everything went to hell. Couldn't go back to the dealership because it was closed. Next day I called a different dealer to get an appointment. I cleared the codes before the day of my appointment. They said that they couldn't do anything because I cleared the codes. That was 1 week before Sturgis. Bike was running fine. No codes. On the way to Sturgis, Ater 300 miles. I had 2 episodes of codes. I'm out in the middle of nowhere.. Cleared the codes. Spent 8 days in the Black Hills. Many miles, no problems. On the way home, had 1 episode. cleared the codes. Not any more problems. I have an appointment for this Fri. I've been riding it since I got home. Trike has been running fine since. So, I have been actively trying to get things looked at.

    Default Hate electrical problems

Apparently you felt confident enought that the issue wasn't severe enough to stop you from making the long distance trek to Sturgis. Problems like that are alway in the back of your mind while riding. Will I break down and have to call a tow truck? Dirty rotton commies probably installed and electrical blocker in the chip on a friday. I'm happy you made the round trip complete! Will be following your story in the future posts. Let us know. Thanks!

I think the issue is caused by not allowing sufficient time between turning on the ignition and starting the bike. The computer will sweep the gauges and illuminate all "bulbs" in the cluster. After that, all systems are go to start the spaceship. The first restart after the event the check engine light and codes will still be present. The second restart after the event the codes will still be stored but will appear as historic and not cause a check engine light. Hopefully the solution is to just wait a moment, after ignition on, before blast off.

Well, I always turn the key on before I mount the trike. Giving a few moments to wake up. Harley gives a little warning on the screen. Hit the button. And away I go to start. What gets me is, the trike runs great all day. Then I stop for gas or a break. That's when the codes come on. Not all the time, but when it wants to malfunction. When we drove to Sturgis and after the two malfunctions, the trike ran great all week that we were there. When it decides to malfunction, it's, when I stop.????

As we know the speedo does more than measure mph. Notice all the diagnostics displayed when key on/ switch on. The ecm/bcm rarely go bad. I would suspect the speedo at this point. Remove seat and trim and look for any loose connections. Do a wiggle test at the connectors and see if you can duplicate the hot shutoff issue.

OK. So took the trike into the dealership this morning. Told him what was going on. Left the trike there. 2 hrs. later they called and said it was ready. What they found was, the battery cable was loose on the battery. That will definitely cause codes he said. Well, we shall see. They also found one of the screws on the inner fairing was gone. Must have not tightened it when they replaced the radio unit. (Maybe the same for the battery cable?) Who knows. Let's just hope this is the end of this saga. Thanks for all the comments. Jerry.

Hopefully the solution is to just wait a moment, after ignition on, before blast off.

Sorry to have to do so but I gotta call BS on this. I have (and always have) just started my HD right up. No problem. You don't wait on your car to start it up do you?

Hope they have your problem fixed. I had a loose battery cable throwing codes on my 21 TG.

Tightened up and problem went away.

Sounds a little bit like a POST test (power on self test) that a computer goes through.
