    Default General question about trikes

    Hello,

    After riding for over 50 years, I am thinking about my first trike. Sold my bike yesterday and my wife is telling me that I should get a trike. I will buy used if I get one. My question is about floorboards. Some I'm looking at have them and others don't. I have mixed feelings and thought I would ask those of you who already own them.

    I will most likely go with a Wing or an RSV. The standard reverse has me leaning toward the wing but I have one and ridden Royal Star Ventures for many miles with great results. I know that a reverse kit is available for the RSV from Hannigan but I'm not very impressed with it. Very noisy from what I've seen.

    Thanks for any input. Also, If you live within a couple hundred miles of the Northeast Ohio area and have a trike for sale, I might be interested.

    Don..welcome to Trike Talk..👍👍..

    Me’ I personally wouldn’t ride a trike with pegs ..Floor boards are the way to go…👍

    Welcome to trike talk!

    I have an RSV/Hannigan with floorboards.

    For sure get the boards. They help keep debris and water off your feet. I think a trike looks better with them as well. JMHO.

    I also have the reverse, use it now and then but don't find it to be a necessity. It is convenient at times but could certainly do without.

    Don, welcome aboard from San Antonio, Texas. I suggest you test ride a few trikes until you find one you can't go home without. It would be a good idea to take your wife with you to be sure she is happy.

    Don,

    Welcome to TrikeTalk from Mesa, AZ.

    I bought my GW trike used and it had boards on it. I had them removed and glad I did. Here's my take on them;

    1st They really look great.

    2nd They help keep feet and lower legs dryer in wet weather

    3rd They help keep feet and legs warm in cold weather.

    Now the reasons I had mine removed;

    1st They tend to restrict air flow (cooling) to your feet and legs in hot weather.

    2nd They tend to get beat up by road debris and over time/miles need refinishing.

    3rd They eliminate the ability to put your feet on the ground to assist with reversing.

    4th Some are not suitable for supporting the weight of a person standing (some are OK)

    5th Some require a heal-toe shifter for riding. (I'm not a fan of heal-toe).

    After mine were removed I installed mini-boards and traditional highway pegs which gives me all the foot position options I need while still retaining the OEM shift and brake pedals.

    Hope this helps. Good luck in your search..... Jim

    The main reason I never wanted the floor boards is that I wanted to retain the first-glance-look of a 2-wheeler. I was never really ready to give up my 2-wheels addiction.

    Adding the boards, to me, makes the trike look fat and cumbersome. I did as Jim did and had the mini boards put on for comfort rather than keeping the pegs, as well as added the Kuryakyn switchblade style highway pegs for a longer leg stretch when needed.

    Plus, the boards can sometimes be in the way to get to the underside. However, I know different people who have full boards and just love them.

    Welcome Don. I bought my 14 Tri Glide last year and after modding it a bit Mrs Notgrownup and I love it. Footboards for sure in my opinion. It’s nice not having to worry about holding it up. The stability is lovely.

    Default Now an owner

    Well I sold the Ultra Classic yesterday and it pulled out of here around 2:30. I had found a trike that I wanted to look at but still wasn't sure I wanted one. My wife talked me into going to look at it and at 5:00, I pulled back into my driveway on a 2005 Royal Star Venture with Hannigan conversion. A couple of people here know me and that I have been running a Venture owners website for about 15 years. I have owned 7 Ventures over the years and am very familiar with them and have always loved the RSV. So this one has 28,000 miles on it. Hannigan conversion with reverse, floorboards, aux gas tank, Chrome wheels, and EZ Steer. The bonus was that it also came with a like new color matched Bushtec Roadstar trailer.

    So, we'll see how it goes. Only ride so far was the hour ride home. Will probably try to get it out for a while today. Here are some pictures. It also included a Utopia rider's backrest which wasn't on it but it is now. It was a pleasant surprise because that is the first thing I would have ordered. Today I ordered Baron's handlebar risers, cup holders, and a bluetooth to aux port transmitter.

    Thanks for your input on my questions. This one has the floorboards but I can always remove them later if I end up not liking them. I think I will like them though.

    Default Floor Boards

    I was having some trouble getting off and on my trike. Mini floor boards fixed that. I can easily mount and unmount now plus very comfortable riding.
