    Default trike brake parts

    hi all

just about to take delivery of a 2000 Honda gl1500 trike ,I'm not sure when the conversion was done but having paid out when i got back home i couldn't help but think that whilst i knew lots about the 1500 i knew nothing about the trike

The first thing that sprung to mind was what happens when its due rear pads and discs ,so how do i firstly find out what the rear end is off ?

what's worrying my is i might be left with 11000 worth of unusable trike

thanks in advance for any help

Don't be surprised if it has Ford 9" drum brakes like a 1980 Pinto. Solid axle likely is a Ford 6.75 integral Pinto axle shortened. Rear universal is likely a big cap Ford 1310 series, thicker caps under the u-bolts retention in rear yoke. Drive shaft might be a GL 1500 shaft cut and welded in a yoke or it might be a splined shaft with 3/8" set screw retainer. Front U-joint is either a GL1500 or Valkyrie U-joint Not junk, it's all available but it will pay you handsomely to know what you have.

Only thing I really wanted to add, this is a left rear brake, long shoes at rear, short shoes in front.

Really a nice picture with no brake dust covering everything.

A great picture for someone who maybe forgot the order. I always lay parts on the floor in a pattern that will aid in replacement, one can get anything for these Ford drum brakes. I do one brake at a time.

Friend of mine decided to reline his old Mustang's drum brakes ... He took all the parts off all 4 drums and put them in a bucket to clean, then realized he had no idea how to separate the parts or to reassemble his brakes with new shoes. He did have clean stuff, but what a mess.

Looks like a 9" Ford brake drum to me, even to the number 212043-C stamping ... and the fins. I just looked up a 1980 Ford Pinto brake drum but my '92 Thunderbird had the same rear brakes as do a lot of older Fords with drum rear brakes. You'll often see them listed as 1-3/4" wide or sometimes as 1.81" wide shoes. They did play with rear wheel cylinder diameters as a way of tailering them to application. I used to have a lot of info, but after I sent it back home to the original owner in 2019, most of it seems to have gotten away. I owned it 15 years though. If ever replacing wheel cylinders, might have to measure your's.

More Information for ACDELCO 18B21 (rockauto.com)

Post in another thread has some other info you might need someday?

Most of it is like late '70s or early '80 Ford Pinto, Mustang II, etc. Even up into the '90s Ford used a lot of 9" drum brakes on cars. Your rear axle is a 6.75" integral carrier rear with a stamp steel rear inspection plate, but they came with one of two different gaskets, square looks like a square with 4 rounded corners, octagonal has 8 sides, no curves. Keep in mind that these numbers are from the latest GTL book I had, Many will need to be cross referenced.

You can experiment with other rear wheel cylinders too, Ford made them in several diameters. Bigger will increase braking force while decreasing effort but increases travel, smaller will decrease brake force requiring more effort but decreases travel. It's a balancing act, I played with them but in the end, went back to the sizes as Lehman used.
