    Cool Camping Thoughts

I like to camp on trips rather than get motels. I was wondering if anybody has any thoughts on gear that is easy to carry on my Tri Glide and keep me off the ground and dry. I have looked at those cots with a tent and mattress, but they appear to be too big and bulky. Any thoughts from the outdoors people out there?

Good morning - I too love camping - haven't done it lately. In the past, we have had both a motorcycle cargo trailer and a motorcycle camping trailer.

Sounds like you want something a little simpler - so, might I suggest you consider a trailer hitch carrier. Install a hitch, get the carrier and you will be able to carry tons of stuff.

    Good luck and enjoy.

    Post Trailer

I have a trailer hitch on my Tri Glide but I have not ever pulled anything with it or any motorcycle. It would be a challenge to get used to that but it s an idea. Thanks for the input.

Jungle hammock. In the south snakes like to cuddle with you.

Depends on wether or not you're solo. I camp A LOT... with my triglide and always solo. Carrying gear is not a problem because I have the entire passenger seat to load big stuff. I generally pack all my food and cooking equipment in the back trunk. There is plenty of room in there. I also load my small axe, knives, Klymit double V air mattress in the trunk. In the top case I pack a small amount of clothing, wash kit, rain gear, electronics and stuff I'll need for gas ups and quick stops. On the passenger seat goes my sleeping bag, tent and camp chair. I have a REI camp dome 2 tent, and I usually take an OLD coleman flannel lines Schlaf sack. If I want to pack smaller I'll take a mummy bag and ditch the chair. I do not have a rack on my top case lid. I do not have a trailer. I think that with a little time spent in the garage you can easily pack all your camp gear.

If my wife travels with me we have to stay in hotels because all the things i just mentioned are replaced by her shoes and stuff.

Are you going by yourself or with a back seat ryder?

I went to Sturgis last year no BSR and spent a week camping.I used most all the camping gear I had from my Ultra limited. Things you need:

Tent - look for a backpacking type of tent that breaks down small the poles are the longest thing

air mattress, sleeping bag, sheets, wool blanket, pillow, clothes, ect. Everything packs easy in the trike. Just like the Ultra.

I have a rack on the tour-pak and I put a rack bag on it and keep rain suit and jackets and such in there and put dry bags on the rear seat and strap them down. Tons of room between the trunk and tour-pac . Small stuff sacks work great in the trunk. Easy to separate things in small sacks and they push into all the corners and pack good in the trunk.

Not suggesting that you tow. Instead, since you already have a hitch on the trike, just add this. You will never know it is there and can carry tons of stuff.

A big NO, it is good in a campground, I went at least 10 years in a row, no problem, it is safe, people are doing the same thing as you, why would they take your stuff.

Now I have a cycle mate trailer 2000, it hauls quite a bit of stuff, when taking the girl friend it filled up pretty quick, when by self I have plenty of room and room to spare. I never worried at all about the trailer, it was locked up, had a cooler on the front of it for my beer, pop and what ever you can think of.

    All for now Trampas

No, I leave it setup in the campground till I'm ready to move out of town or head home. I used several different campgrounds over the years and never had a problem.

Back in the early 90s I started doing annual solo road trips of about 10 days each. I had a tent that fit nicely in the trunk of my Goldwing. I also packed a sleeping pad and sleeping bag along with minimal personal toiletries and cloths. Always had plenty of room. After hauling the tent around the country for 7 or 8 years, I gave it away to a family that had kids playing in the parking lot of the motel where I was staying at South Lake Tahoe. It was unused! I still have the sleeping bag and pad packed away in my storage shed. They are both still unused today. I'm a bad camper but a good motel'r.....

A few times while touring, I mailed a box of stuff home to a neighbor (usually excess/dirty cloths) in order to lighten my load.....

Funny thing is... I have ridden for miles and miles looking for a campsite and not finding one, but passing dozens of motels.
