Hello all from Aliquippa PA

could anyone tell me what the recommended fork oil and grease to use on my steering stem bearings. I have a 1998 Honda Gl1500 with a Motor Trike kit. I’m putting a 6 degree EZ Steer on it and I want to make sure I use the right grease and oil. Thank you!

On my 96SE I used the Honda grease and oils I got from the dealer. Never had any issues. Since I had a quantity of the Bel Ray I just used it for everything.

Recommended fork oil was 7w but I found the 10w to give a better ride. I see now they have a 15w that might be even better.

As far as the grease goes I used the same grease for the bearings and the final drive. As I remember it was Bel Ray grease that was recommended for the final drive. A marine grade water proof grease. The book called for and Extreme Pressure grease and I figured that if the Bel Ray stood up to the pressure of the rear drive it would easily work for the steering head.

Welcome to TrikeTalk Randy. Another thought...... With tapered steering head bearings your steering head should be torqued to 35 ft/lbs for a trike, NOT the torque Honda uses for a 2 wheeler. Good luck..... Jim

I'm from Cranberry Twp. about 15 miles from you and my name is Greg.

Your steering head bearings need regular grease as they don't heat up and the grease is just to lube the bearings. As for your forks I would use 15 weight fork oil. Bel-Ray is a good brand. You didn't mention if the fork springs had been replaced. A 1998 the fork springs are probably beginning to sag and could need replaced. Progressive springs is a good choice.

In my 1999 Valkyrie trike I have Progressive springs and use 15 weight fork oil and the 4 degree rake kit I used red & tacky grease on the bearings.

I just installed a 6 degree rake kit in my 2008 Goldwing with a Motor Trike kit. I also rebuilt the forks and used 15 weight fork oil and installed Progressive fork springs. I also changed the air filter and new oil and filter. This was my winter project and I am almost done, just putting everything back together.

If you need help I'm only 1/2 hour away and retired.
