    Default Fueling Short Sump Plug

    Just ordered a Feuling short sump plug and I am unsure where to install it on a 2017 107 CI M8 trike. Does anyone know if it is the same location as a 2019 trike?

    Or if anyone has already done it , can you please send pictures of the location. Also is the factory plug red in color?

    Sorry if I seem stupid , but the picture in the factory owners manual of the engine and trans drain plugs has me confused. I keep wondering if the sump plug is plug #3 , the one the manual says not to remove.

    It is NOT the plug in the oil pan, it is in the crankcase

    Look under the RS of engine, # 23 in diagram

    Thank you Jack. Now I feel like a complete idiot. I should have figured the difference between the engine case and the oil pan.

    Now the fun is going to be lying on the ground trying to get at the plug.

    You may want to use a heat gun to help get that plug out, go slow removing it, if it does not go easy use more heat, that plug could crack the case coming out

    Same going back in, it does not have to be super tight to seal

    Yes you are correct Bob, the M8 crancases are different than the Twin Cams

    Thru the manufacturing process on the M8 crankcases not ALL of the M8 cases are the same

    Some of the cases the sump plug is set deeper causing an obstruction to an oil return, gallery. Note not ALL cases are the same, see this thread for more info

    Sometimes when not riding some will sit and stare at their bike and become bored so they feel the need to add something to their bike whether or not it’s necessary or practical…

    IE; Hey I’ve seen this Do-Dads on a Hardcore Harley Forum…And ask has anyone seen this..Then the next thing that happens is everyone is going to have to have it…. JC Whitney was the King of Do-Dads …(Like put a Special Whitney golf ball in your gas tank and you’ll get 87 MPG.😁…1

    My brothers and I ordered a lot of stuff from J.C.Whitney. I ordered those tablets that you drop in the tank to increase fuel mileage for the winter rat I had. Don't think they worked. That car always had a bad smell when the heater was running. I found out from a local old time cop that a mobster had be found shot in the head in that car down by the canal. It was summer and he was in there for about a month till someone got suspicious. Sold that car in the spring.

    I have split M8 crankcases and seen the OEM plug, in my opinion the short plug is a cure for a non-problem, invented by a company that wants to sell overpriced plugs.

    If you are really concerned that your engine will sump, install the latest design OEM oil pump, about 150 dollars.

    Your factory service manual will walk you through the entire job start to finish.

    The M-EIGHT main sump cross port on the inside of the M-Eight engine case is in a slightly different location & height in each engine case. This cross port is created when the bottom plug hole is machined and tapped by the factory. The machining breaks through the casting wall, creating the sump port. Whereas the Twin Cam engine cross scavenge pick up hole is a machined bore, and is in the same location in every engine case.

    Not every M8 crankcase is the same, that said even some M8 engines with the new oil pump ( introduced in 2019 and is the current pump thru 23 models) have shown signs of sumping

    It would make sense on 17 - early 19 models to install the newer oil pump first, still if IMO it were my engine I would install the shortie sump plug @ the same time

    Finally installed the Feuling shorty sump plug today. ( Mail to Canada take forever these days.)

    Took it slow. Preheated motor and then put a heat gun on sump plug for 5 minutes. No problem with removal.

    Even though my engine was good with only 6 ounces in the sump, I am glad I installed the new plug as a piece of mind thing.

    Default sump plug

    Checked the amount of oil in my 2019 trike there was 8 to nine ounces of oil supposed to be no more than six, put new plug in and had harley replace the oil pump, lifters, adjustable push rods. about 1900. dollars. Removing the sump plug was no problem. It might be a little over board for some people but it runs a lot better now and a new engine would be about 8000.00 dollars
