    Default The importance of maintanence

    In the last couple of weeks, 2 customers have call in the middle of cross country trips asking for help on a fellow person's Wing that they are traveling with. In both cases, the Wings in question had to turn back and not continue. Of coarse it affects the other people on the tour too.

    So here's the most important thing to remember about maintaining a Wing. Follow the maintanence schedule to tee. Skip no step. Many DIYr's can replace parts like air filters and brake pads, but have no idea how to properly inspect the brake system. Basically, simple brake pad replacement starts with a proper inspection first. The same is true with all the other inspects required according to the Maintanence Schedule. Also true is the need of following the maintanence schedule that comes with a trike kit.

    Unfortunanly, proper maintanence and repair costs money, and many owners think avoiding doing such, or picking and choosing, is a great solution. Unfortunately if true, the Wing become a far better in town lunch runner. Also, catching up on maintanece is not the same as doing all along. Basically it comes down to this. Of coarse a manufacture writes a maintanence schedule cover their ass, they also want their customer to get maximum enjoyment from their product, but it is also wrote as a guide to the cheepest ways to properly maintain one.

    On 5th gens, the cost to properly maintain a 2-whl Wing is about $2,200-2,500 per every 10,000 miles of riding. A trike will be far more.
    Please keep in mind that anytime I share or give advice about a motorcycle, unless I state otherwise, I am always referring to GL1800's and no other.

    Wow! I don't think many Wing riders who have trike kits pay anywhere near that price. I can change my oil for around 50 bucks, change brake pads in the front for about 85. Haven't needed to change rear brakes yet or the air filter at this point. Front tire was 127 plus 35 to have it mounted. What am I missing? I have over 18,000 on my 2019

    I don’t have a wing but I believe this is important message for any machine. We hear so many stories about interruptions in group or solo trips because of preventable simple tasks. My wife always asks, what are you doing to the bike now? I just say I’m cleaning it. I have the Wheels off the Tri Glide checking pads, shocks cables etc. sometimes the only way to see these is exploratory… when I am sitting on it enjoying the road I feel good about knowing I did check that ———— .

    Consult your Owner's Manual. It has a list of inspections needed in the Maintance Chart.
    Please keep in mind that anytime I share or give advice about a motorcycle, unless I state otherwise, I am always referring to GL1800's and no other.
