Hello all, new around here. I've had trikes for many years though, VW powered. But they are gone.
Now have a Yamaha V-Star 650 with a GM rear end, likely from an S10.
Whoever made this trike up, or who repaired it at some time, did not do a good weld on the drivewhaft.
I have the hardened Yamaha shaft going in to a U-Joint yoke from GM.
The weld failed. It was poorly done.
Wondering who could do a great professional job of making me a new driveshaft.
I've showed what I have to a few welders etc. It seems welding a hardened shaft is not recommended. I've been told it will snap where the heat was put to it. Buggers up the heat treatment/hardening etc.
I wish I could show what I have to a skilled person who can make me a new shaft.
I cut the shaft off (like an idiot) so I wouldn't have to take the rear end off...It's caused me much grief.
What I really wanted was a slip joint like a car shaft has but nobody seems to be able to do anything like that.
Since these pics were taken I got the broken weld rewelded, but I am still left with the cut shaft..plus the helpful welder was kind enough to grind the shaft end to the point that it's no longer full dimension.

There's a motorcycle wrecker nearby with a like new shaft and coupler to start anew with.
