Thread: Starting Issues 2023 Triglide

    Default Starting Issues 2023 Triglide

    I have a 2023 Anniversary Triglide with 4400 miles on it. In the last 500 miles or so the trike has failed to start after completion of a ride of about 50 miles. This has occurred twice. Each ride was on the same stretch of Interstate at speeds around 65 to 70 mph.

    I stop the bike and after about a 5 minute pause try restart. Each time the trike begins to fire and run real rough, as if running on one cylinder, then dies. Immediate attempts to start fail to even get it to fire. If I let the trike sit for a half hour or so it fires right up.

    On the first occasion this happened ( in my garage) I took the plastic cap off the gas tank and as I did so there was an extended hissing sound as if the vent was not operating and the tank was in a high degree of suction. Thinking it might be a defective venting gas cap my dealer gave me a new cap.

    The trike ran fine until yesterday when the problem reoccured at the HD dealership. I forgot to tell the Service man about the tank suction and so it was not checked. However the dealer is initially stumped by why this happening. They are going to investigate further.

    FYI the trike was at the dealership because the liquid circulating pump was not working at all. Just discovered that after noticing the engine/oil temp was around 290 after ride on a 60 to 70 degree day. Somehow I think the two issues, starting and circulating pump failure are somehow related.

    Has anyone had a problem similar to this and what was the solution to it?

    Just shooting from the hip here..But..Sounds like you still have a venting problem….But not from the gas cap…If I’m not mistaken the tank has a vent tube that might be pinched???

    Hi John, to Trike Talk and your first post

    Is your check engine light on or flashing?

    See this link, scroll to the bottom to see how to retrieve codes, write them down do not clear them( if you have stored codes) take it back to the dealer for in depth diagnostics, you have a 2 year fender to fender warranty

    Check engine light is not flashing or on. It acts like an engine not getting gas which would point to a pinched vent tube. But why occasionally, actually infrequently, will the starring issue occur? I have driven the same stretch of Interstate numerous times as well as other rides with no starting problem whatsoever. Strange!

    I had an older car that did the same when the gas tank was at a 1/4 of tank…..Cave man style I drilled a hole though the gas cap to vent the tank.. for me anyway problem solved.. For you ! take it back to the dealer and mention the vacuum problem.. that’s what warranties are for.. could be more than a pinched tube vent could be a weak fuel pump.. But John, please, when you find out what the fix was post it could be of help for other people…👍

    It is perplexing but as I said the dealer will have to do diagnostic s on it in conjunction with the circulating pump failure. But right have a sneaky feeling that they may still come up dumbfounded at the starting issue. We shall see.

    Remove your seat and locate the( evap line#19)coming from your gas tank, see if the line is kinked anywhere, you can also disconnect it where it runs down the backbone, connect another piece of hose to it and see if you can blow thru it

    Tell your nit wit dealer to check the battery and chassis grounds. Have them do a full charging systems diagnostics- they have a $10k machine for that. The tank vent is a simple thing..it either works or dosnt and if it dosnt you will smell a strong gasoline odor. Heck you'll probably smell it either way in a garage.Since these are not true fat bob's, there is a crossover from right to left inside the tank. Take note of when your problems occur. Full tank or low? The hissing you are hearing indicates holes in the fuel pump pickup tube, but it's a new bike but who knows with the Chinese junk they're using these days. It could also be that the geniuses at the MOCO assembled it wrong. No help but just based on what I'm hearing from new owners, I wouldn't buy a new Harley Davidson anything if I was in the market today.

    I’ve recently had the same type of issue with my Toyota mini van…. I’m going to speculate that possibly the crankcase position sensor is faulty.

    When the sensor “cooled down” I was able to restart the van. Same exact symptoms.

    It’s in the shop as we speak.

    Info I found on the web regarding the CPS; “The Crankshaft Position Sensor is a critical part of a Harley’s engine management system. It delivers crankshaft position data to the bike’s electronic control module, which in turn determines engine timing and fuel delivery.     No real progress on the starting issue but I have some info of possible interest or usefulness on the circulating pump which was not working and also a problem.

    I bought the trike with the SE Stage 2 torque cam and the HD Street Tuner. Bought the bike in early March and had to wait for HD to get the tune programing completed by July before cam could be installed (along with VH pipes and SE air filter, cam plate and oil pump)...but that's another story.

    Turns out the SE tuner is not programed correctly and did not recognize the existence of the of thr circulating pump. Dealer verified the circulating pump did not work by manually attempting to start pump with tuner in place. They then removed tuner , reprogrammed bike to stock and pump worked fine without tuner. Apparently there is an software update which has corrected this, so i am going to take in my tuner for update and then we'll see.

    Regarding the non starting issue it may be a fuel pump issue but I might not find out for sure as they didn't plug my bike into their computer right away for diagnostics. Would have thought they would have done that as the problem is random and infrequent, and occurred right in the dealership. Opportunity lost..
