Steel Wheels/Rims

I would like to change out the stock rear wheels on my 2010 Tri. It is to hard to keep the aluminum clean and from staining. Every now and then I try to find out if anyone has found some steel automotive type wheels that will fit the HD Tri Glide Rear. I have a black Tri and like the old school look, would like to find a plain steel rim I could paint black, I could go with a reverse rim or a chrome reverse if necessary for fit.

Black rims with baby moons and then go with black spokes on front or a solid rim from a Fat Boy powder coated black. I think Harley did the one of wheel pattern on purpose.

Was hoping some of the aftermarket trike owners might have some suggestions on a plain or reverse steel rim/wheel that will fit the Tri Glide.

This is as much of an e-mail test as anything else for the moment.

A Brief History:

I do not have a TG, I have a Lehman kitted Ultra....just about the same thing except for the TG emblem on your gas tank. They did change the axle-flange pattern on the TG as opposed to the older kits. Lehman built all their kits just alike, no matter if it was a metric shaft, or a Harley belt. They used ford fox-bodied (Pinto, Mustang, T-Bird...etc.) parts from the early 80's to mid 90's in their brake systems. If you will notice...you have a 4-bolt lug pattern which is a 4 x 4.25 (108mm) just like the mid-80 Mustangs, etc. I have helped guys with Harleys and Honda's do this conversion. In our case...it was to change drums to disc, but it does not matter whether you want to do it for that purpose, or upgrade your current disc system.

You will have some measuring and a good bit of leg-work to accomplish this, so you may want to opt to wait to do this in the off-season, or take the route of upgrading your calipers only. If you want more information on a caliper upgrade, let me know and we can talk about that.

I am going to attach the plans for the pre-TG Lehman trikes. The caliper bracket I build (or have built) will not ftr the flange bolt-pattern on the current TG axle flange. The TG flange does not appear in the standard list and diagrams of axle flanges, so...they have changed that. Just look at what I send you here for a few days and see if you want to try and tackle it. I just helped a 70-Plus year old guy (I am 63 myself) do this on his Honda Monarch Lehman kit. His total cost was around $400, which included having a machinist turn the rotors for him.

I can lock my rear wheels at any speed, have close to 23,000 miles on my pads and likely have another 10,000 or so in them.

You are bound by the 5/8 stock rear master cylinder....and you will not find a bigger one to fit the bike, which is why you cannot simply use some sort of automobile caliper. You have to match the caliper volume to that 5/8 master cylinder.

This IS NOT SOME REDNECK SHADE-TREE job. The hot rod crowd puts disc brakes on everything from a t-model on up and it's not rocket science.

There are some pictures of mine in "prototype" mode. I have since done a few cosmetic things but the design and product is the same.

You can fool with paying the Harley tax and continue to buy pads every few thousand miles and god only knows what they get for replacement rotors.

OR....do this and be done with it.
