The cat has gotten to annoying

Gonna gut the cat this next week. It has gotten altogether too annoying in the warm weather.

Was planning on having to remove the entire exhaust system...

Just going to remove the heat shield and cut a rectangle on the outboard side of the cat and gut it...weld it back closed and replace the heat shield.

Gonna use some leather to protect the bike from flying sparks and debris.

I took pipe off, sawed it in half, removed the cat, welded it back together, and wrapped it with heat wrap so the weld can not be seen, I had to reset ECM with TTS. The cat is really glued in good, it was a little difficult getting the whole thing out. It also doubled the loudness of my V&H 4" slip ons. It did remove a lot of the heat.

Just a note to the wise....

Best to cut the cat housing in half as Dave did then pull all the material out. After doing that you need to sand/grind/buff the collector interior clean.

There have been a few guys that did not get all the material out or have a few hanging chads. During decel the material sucked back into the exhaust valve and into the combustion chamber. Can you say ring and valve damage?

Draw a straight line with a Sharpie across the area you wish to cut, finish the gut job then match your Sharpie lines when welding.

Went the route of the Kuryakyn Perfect Storm Tune Up Kit. Cut the cat out in the process.
Once you get rid of all the "politically correct" EPA crap that Harley is mandated to put on, the trike runs as it was suppose to. It is at least 15 degrees cooler and my right foot is no longer in the oven.

I decided to go the route my husband took in case the exhaust was too loud without the cat. He bought a Stock header from a guy named Rollinfast on Ebay. That way I keep my stock system just in case the g-man starts getting picky. Ron said this guy really does a good job cleaning and welding the pipe. He also paints the header with high temp paint. I try to think "what if", so with the stock header boxed up on the shelf in the garage, I can't loose!

That is the guy I got mine from, Kokomo, Indiana. Does a great job. I then wrapped mine with the header tape and sealed. Removed a great deal of heat.
I am now also happy with the sound of stock mufflers.
To this point I have not added air cleaner or tuner. That is next, but to this point, I find it runs fine with CAT removed and everything else stock with no tuner.

I killed the one in my wifes bike, but have been reluctant to post. As to warranty and what not and who may be reading. And yes I replaced the stock head pipe in case we hafta go back.
Can we put photos in post? I've not seen any and I'm not sure it's allowed or where else to put them.

This is of the CATless pipes after header wrap and during first "smoke" out when fired up the first time.
