Drilling holes in Hannigan

Got a new license plate bracket and need to drill two extra holes. Two questions - the Hannigan is fiberglass, are there any precautions I should take in drilling? Secondly, I need to either pull down the carpet from the trunk to place the nut/washer for the new bracket and replace the carpet or possibly drill right through the carpet. Any recommendations folks? I'm pretty inept when it comes to such things so many thanks for advice.....

Fiberglass is pretty easy to drill, especially since you don't care too much what the backside looks like. A new sharp drill can't be a bad idea. As well as a pilot hole and/or an indentation from a "countersink" bit, to stop the real deal from wandering off. Lots of suggestions (not all compatible) here, from folks who seem to be knowledgeable:

Carpet doesn't drill well at all. Definitely remove/replace it.

Thanks Cycleguy - since I wrote this, Hannigan got back to me with same recommendations you did. It was a test and you passed :wtg:
