Just installed the solo J&M handlebar mounted cb radio on the wife's VTX 1800 trike. WE had been using the Scala G-4s, they work pretty good, but are lacking, if you have more then four in your group and while they are good for up to a mile distance, that is only under ideal conditions. However overall, if you have nothing else and want bluetooth, a good way to go.
I have the Gold Wing Trike with CB, so when I used the G-4 headset I was losing the use of my cb and could not listen to my Sat radio, MP3 and the FM via my headset, so I looked into the J&M set up. Found a used one online on Ebay and got the head unit for about $100 (retail was about $262). Got the behind the neck headset from Sierra Electronics and the J&M Antenna mount. I went down to my local truck stop and bought a three foot Francis Antenna, I have used them before on my semi trucks and always found them to be intune (SWR), if the correct length of coax is used.
Installed, SWR was just fine and we tested them out this afternoon. We had at least four times the distance with the CB verus the G-4s, we could hear each other rather well at 4 miles apart. Wife now has to push a button to talk and I don't have to listen to all the wind noise, as the G-4s were voice activated and the VTX even with a face shield have a lot of wind noise. I think this set up is the way to go, but we will hold onto the g-4s untill we know for sure.
My buddy is comming here from Florida and we both will be headed to Sturgis within the next week. The wifes have to stay home on this trip....lol.
