My owners manual says used 10 w30 motor oil. Yet i see a lot of folks using 10w 40w. I guess my question would be..Why?

10-40 would have a higher temp range for HOT AREAS say like texas, nm az. I am from pa and used 10-40 mobil1 4t but switched back honda brand FULL SYN 10-30, much smoother operation, shifting and engine sound, being in La. I would think 10-40 would be what I would use but its a toss up in my opinion, FWIW, JMHO

Thanks TRIKERBOB69 I won't be riding in extreme heat due to medical reasons, so from what I understand, I guess the full syn 10 w 30 will work for me.
Be carefull not to buy a oil that says energy efficent oil are something like that because they have additives in them that will make your clutch slip, remember your clutch runs in oil,and with the addition of a trike kit it can make it easier for the clutch to slip.

Many folks (me included) have found very good results with Shell Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic in the blue jug. Shifts smooth, is doing a great job in SW MO, where we have had 95° and above since the first week of June. I first heard about it by lurking on the GWRRA forums and on the Steve Saunders GW forum. Was leery at first, but tried it and likes it. Been using it for about 5 years. I split the oil filter during the fall oil change in Sept before our annual family trip north and to the Davis Rally and have never found anything bad in the filter. I change oi twice a year - late April or Early March and in early Sept. Might be overkill, but it is cheap insurance.

I ditto what Ozarkryder said. Shell Rotella T6 made a big difference in the noise level and smoother shifting in my 08 GW.

I have been using amsoil for many years with no problems.
for the goldwing SAE 10W-30 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (MCT) Amsoil oil.
I live in Alabama with 90+degrees right now.
The manual says to change every 8,000 miles or each year so that's okay by me.
I buy my amsoil by the case.
