When it won't shift down

I don't have a lot of experience yet, so this may be a really dumb question. Yesterday I had to stop really fast when a light changed twice on a long ride. Both times, I could not get my trike to down shift. I usually shift while slowing, but it was a fast stop and I was concentrating on stopping. After the light changed, it stalled, and when I restarted, I was able to down shift, but I was delayed getting through the lights. My husband told me to let the clutch in and out, but that didn't seem to work when it happened the second time. Any help?

I can't help 'cuz that happens to me a lot too. I just try to "coast" up to a light or stop sign in second gear and get ready to do a rolling stop. If I know I am going to have to come to a complete stop, then I downshift into first before I stop.

Hi Reader1, Not being sure what kind of Trike you drive so I will make a stab at it. Without "double clutching" you should be able to down shift to second and sometimes first gear when stopped. If you cannot get it in first, as your hubby told you, let the clutch out slowly to just get the Trike barely moving then put the clutch back in and down shift to first. Now you are ready to take off at your will. I hope this helps..

I have a 750 Honda Motor Trike. I think my husband was trying to tell me the same thing, but I missed something. I will try to get it to move if it ever happens again. What about on a hill? Normally I downshift before stopping, and hope to do that most of the time. Thanks for the help and letting me know that it is not just me!
