Default Cam selections between 255,54,and 555

I know the 255 cams are low torque and play out around 4500. Is this good with 2010 gearing with 32 pulley? Then there is the andrews 54 which I know there are people running this cam (please comment) then the 555,s M3,s are running I'm just looking for some feed back on these cams. I cruise between 65 and 75, and need some passing torque in 6th gear. May change to 30 tooth pulley some time later mostly for 1st gear ratio. I know WIZ has installed 54,s in Tri,s. Thanks for your input.

Wiz and M3 would be the best to answer....
I have a 10 and the 30t is one of the best changes..I would do it before the cams....made a big difference in first and overdrive(6th) ....
I'm not a speed demon, I believe the 30 tooth gear change, pipe, mufflers, air cleaner and a TTS tuner would be all most need...no cam change necessary, unless you want to do wheelies...

The SE255 is a decent cam but with its early intake close 25 it can make a 103 picky about fuel quality because the CCP will be in the 200 - 205 range. My dad and I both ran the SE255 last year with the 32 tooth sprocket, it had nice bottom end punch but ran out of breath around 4,300 rpm. While out west we had to dose the fuel with octane booster on several occasions due to pinging. This past winter we installed the Wood TW555 along with the 30 tooth sprocket, nice upgrade all away around. The later intake close 41 keeps the CCP lower which gives more room for poor fuel quality. This past July we both were out west once again and never had to use octane booster even with 89 octane with 10% ethanol. The Andrews 54 is scary close to the TW555 so it can be used in place of the TW555 if one wants to save a hundred bucks or a touch more. A good compromise cam which would fall in between the SE255, TW555 and Andrews 54 is the Headquarters HQ500 which is a 0034 made for the 07 and later Twin Cams, or even the Andrews 26H.

M3 pretty much covered it but there is more...

The 54's run out of breath far sooner than the 555's as noted. They make the same TQ in the lower areas but you can lose as much as 5 HP over 4500 RPM's with the 54's. This is important only if you plan on running WOT your entire life. So this makes the 54's more attractive $ wise. About $270 for 54's and about $390 for 555's (btw, the idle note is the same for both cams)

S&S 510 is a close second to the 555 and 54's. The 254E SE cam is another good cam for the 103.

For those who still have a 96" the best out there is the Andrews 26H in my opinion (about $260). Cams come in at 1800 and stay the course through 4500. But this cam is not for a 103 and up.. It just won't make the TQ in larger motor.

I did the 26H, 30 tooth, True Duals and TTS on my POSE Trike and was pumping out 95 TQ - 86 HP and it would pull the front wheel easily even with the true duals and their inherent loss of bottom end TQ. Was the 30 tooth that put the icing on the cake.

For those who are considering fuel economy with a cam. Don't be concerned. There are two main factors for fuel economy... first is a good tune for efficient air fuel mixtures. Second is a loose nut that connects the handlebars to the seat. Besides that they all get about the same MPG.

Oh... and guys... CHANGE YOUR LIFTERS IF YOU CHANGE CAMS!

Prior to the Woods 555 cam being released, Woods recommended the TW6-6 for my 2010 TG. That is what I had installed. Please rate this cam in relation to these others. I have also done the 30T. Thanks.

The Woods TW6-6 is a fine cam. Close to the S&S 510 cam with 510 lift, intake open at 20, close at 40. Will give you good bottom end and mid range, top end HP will also drop out about 45-4800 as most bottom end/mid range cams will.

The 555 has superseded the TW6-6 in the minds eye of most as it tends to drop out later in the RPM range... but this is a good cam for the 103.

Is this another good option for a triglide?

    To CycleRama

2010 triglide with a 103 in it, has a stage 1 in it now. will get rid of the cat also..wonder if the cr575 would be a good cam using the stock heads. I would like a better and higher torque curve. Thanks Bob

    From Wes Brown

Bob the CR575 cams would work great. They are a bolt in
and make lots of torque and power were you need it.

Has anyone tried the S & S 557 cams yet? Staying with chain drive?

Looking for more oomph starting off thru passing on the freway. I have a 2010 Tri-Glide with SE air cleaner and tuner, and Bub 7 mufflers. Also thinking of 30t front sprocket.

What should the cost of the cam install be including parts and labor?

When we had my dads trike on the dyno the TW555's in it were still pulling when it hit the rev limiter which I had set at 6,200 rpm. The guy tuning it was surprised.

I see S&S has a 551 in their easy start line, haven't seen a 557. The 551 looks like it would be a decent cam, with the Triglide having ACR's (Automatic Compression Releases) you don't need to worry about the easy start end of the cam. We I had the SE255's I had 0 starting issues and the CCP was in the 200 range.

Labor for cam install will bin the $900+ range, the 30 tooth sprocket will run in the $380+ range.

My 11Tri has the stock Tranny 32T & 68T rear I have a stage 1 with a mild mid-range cam. To get rid of the cats unlike older models you have to replace the head pipes which will void your warrenty. I average about 34-36mpg I'm wondering how much the mpg would change if I went to the 30T?

My 2009 didn't change any after I put the 30t on it. I run between 32 to 35 on two lane roads about 60 mph, riding two up. I think it takes less fuel when it don't have to pull as hard, which makes up for the gear ratio change, just my opinion.
I took a trip around lke michigan this summer. RIding double and pulling a trailer, and I still averaged 32 for 1200 miles. most of it was on two lane roades.

If yours is a 2011 you have the 30T sprocket...only the 09 and 10 got screwed in that department...

Sounds like the cam for the TRI. Please any coments. WIZ, M3 or anyone else. Thanks btw.
I don't have any experience with this cam, looking at the specs I'm skeptical of the 1750 rpm unless compression is set a little higher. The cam will work, it might just be a touch softer on the bottom than they claim due to the later intake closing point.

Thanks M3, they claim cams produce more power and torque which increases cranking compression and improves throttle responce, accelaration and fuel mileage, dyno and track tested. Am trying to find a dyno sheet on these cams. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tom.

If you ask real nice you can probably have him send you the dyno sheets from our TG's.
