Tri Glide 2009 ULTRA Transmission

Seems I have a little problem with my 2009 Tri Glide transmission. Its useing transmission fluid. No it not leaking. It uses about 2 to 2.5 oz's on a trip of 2500 miles. My dealer says this is normal. I don't think so, but where's it going? Any ideas?

If it is not leaking then I'd be looking to see if the primary level is going up. I've never had any of my touring bikes or my trike loose any level in the transmission.

M3 is right, that's about the only place it can go unless there is a leak to the outside.

1oz per 1000 miles... There is room for another 15 or more oz in the primary before it reaches the derby cover so that will be 15,000 miles. This will be tough to prove.

You may not be able to see a high level in the primary and there is no dipstick to check. Remove the derby cover and see if the oil level is just to the bottom of the clutch basket. If the level is all the way up to the inspection hole.... bingo, there's your answer.

There should be no fluid that comes out of the derby cover when you open it up.

change your trans oil to red line shockproog gear oil its heavy and pink in color; then ride your bike and change the primary oil, if you have a primary seal leak you will see it in the used oil because it settles to the bottom of SYN 3 oil (lets sat) and its color is distinstive. good luck

You have to remember there is a seal on the main shaft of the transmission to seal the trans from leaking and there is a seal on the main shaft of the inner primary to keep the primary oil from leaking

If its leaking into the primary it would have to be a cracked transmission main shaft. If the outer main bearing seal was bad it would leak out the trans case by the front belt pulley to the ground when sitting. I wonder if the transmission housing is cracked and its leaking into the engine oil pan? Since the oil pan is bolted to the bottom of the transmission housing.

I dont know if you can detect a ounce ot two of trans oil with the sulfer smell it has when mixed in with the engine oil? You may have to get the Redline shockproof oil for the trans and change it. Ride it and see if it shows up in your engine oil when you drain the engine oil pan

Can you believe this.....another "that's normal". NO....it is not normal for a tranny to loose a noticeable amount of fluid. Like the above posters....it only has a few places it can go, or it does not have the proper amount in it to start with. Put the Redline in and see where it shows-up.

It is certainly true that some can vaporize and exit through the vent-tube, but not enough to make it noticeable after 2-3 thousand miles.
