teardrop campers

Hello, I have a gl1800 with a hannigan trike kit. I was wondering how many people out there tow a teardrop camper. I found one I like right here in wisc and am thinking about buying their plans and makeing one. Right now I have a bunkhouse camper. The camper I am thinking about building is from a company called big woody ...boy I could think of a few pretty funny t shirts I could have made there Looks like they weigh in around 650 lbs empty.

650 lbs seems a little heavy to me, especially if that was empty. Also after looking at their website, they look a little big for a trike. Big Woody Campers - Information

I seen others built that was smaller and lighter that might make a better choice. From what I seen about teardrop trailers is all you get is a bed and a kitchen. You get your extra rooms from add on tents, awnings and canopies. I seen one that had a changing room, shower and a sitting area that set up in like 10 minutes. He said he made it all himself. What weight does your trike weigh Steve,650lb unladen is heavy for towing with a trike.Trikes here are limited to trailer weight of 560lb,may be different in the US,also would really hit your gas mileage and trikes handling when its windy and around the twisties.

Hmmm thanks all good points, I may have to reconsider...Just looked like a fun project but its it would be unsafe to tow with my trike it wouldnt be worth it...I I think the gl1800 is around 920 lbs then ass 300 lbs for the trike kit hmmm yup I think it might be too heavy of a camper...

You have to be sure you can stop safely with 650+ behind you pushing

Micro-lite makes a teardrop made of aluminum empyt weight is 440lbs. No galley but its a sleeper. there is one on e-bay now.

Even at 440lbs greasy wet roads need caution to avoid front wheel lock ups and uncontrolled steering.
Mines in hibernation till salted greasy roads are a thing of the past

Why would you want a Teardrop over your Bunkhouse?
It's heavy, less room and cargo space.
We love our Bunkhouse.

There are a couple of teardrops advertised on ebay. One of them weighs 450 lbs with only a 50 lb hitch weight. That includes the power converter and stereo. A GL1800 should have no problem towing it but it will tank your MPG. I would love to have one for my cross country trip next summer.

I agree, might wind up with the tail wagging the dog.......Not a good thing. I would be VERY concerned about trying this... At a minimum I would want good trailer brakes on the camper, and that is a whole other issue!

I'm in Oz. In Oz you are restricted with a VW style trike to towing 550lbs (US) without brakes on the towed trailer to 660 lbs (US) to tow a trailer with brakes. This is due to the geometry of rear engine trikes. Goldwing- I wouldnt know what you can tow. However consider this. We have a small camper trailer. It's called a detour camper made here in Oz. The trailer is actually made for a motorcycle and weighs tare (no load) 400 lbs (US).

The main reason for this post is what we have been able to do with this camper...all the comforts of home. We have - a small 12 volt fridge, portable toilet, shower, picnic setting, annex, mini kitchen, water, small 12 volt battery. Below is some pics. The toilet is stored inside the front black trunk. A portable shower curtain erects around it so you dont need to lift it around. The trailer has magnetic brakes. The bed is a queen size unit. I made the small kitchenette on the inside of the tailgate. Best to gather new ideas especially light weight materials for your project. As far as teardrops go they were all too heavy for our trike.
