Default Parade Fan

I have the parade fan installed on my trike (2005 Ultra Classic FLHTCUI) and it only runs thru the thermostat. I would also like to wire it thru the aux switch on the dash so I could run it manually if I wanted to. I don't know if they are switching Gnd or Hot also could I just wire the switch in parallel with the thermostat?

If you want to use your accessory switch follow this diagram I attached. To keep from running the power through the accessory switch you will need to get the following

15amp inline fuse housing and fuse

    Bosh style relay

12gauge wiring in red and black

    several female 12g spade connectors

Run the 12g red wire from the battery to the #30 spade on the relay with the in-line fuse and red wire from the #87 spade to the fan. Take the ground wire from the fan & attach the wire to a good spot on the frame.

You can use a standard 16 gauge red wire from the accessory switch to the #86 spade on the relay

Use your 12g black wire from the # 85 to the ground post under the seat near the back of the fuel tank.

You then can use your accessory switch to feed power to your fan without worry of overloading the switch

I mounted my relay for my engine fan next to my fuse box and put a label on the top of it to identify the relay

FLTR I will have to digest this for a while. Is the fan not going thru a relay now? You think the fan would pull too much current for the switch? Thanks for your help.

If fan has the HD wiring harness that came with it then yes it has a relay. But its not wired to run through a accessory switch for manual operation

If you just run the power directly through the acc switch to the fan, most likely the switch will melt. The parade fan does pull more amps then the switch can handle. Adding the relay takes the power load off the switch. The power for the fan is routed through the relay directly from the battery. Also the fan will only run when the ignition is on.

I have a HD parade fan as well, but when I wired mine up I didnt use the thermostat wiring harness that came with it. I have a oil temp gauge that I look at to decide when the engine is getting hot enough for the fan.

This is not a hard job to wire up. The bosch style relay, inline fuse assembly and wiring can be found at NAPA, Autozone, Advance Auto. This wiring setup ensure you wont overload the stock acc switch wiring and cause the wiring to overheat and melt.

Here is a PDF file for the HD parade fan with the wiring diagram for a 2007 and newer. The diagram should be the same for yours they only changed the brackets that hold the fan for the newer model >> http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J04347.pdf

Thanks FLTR I understand what you are saying. I know I don't want to pull too current thru the switch. It was installed by HD so I would think it is installed as you said. If it already has the relay why could I not just wire the switch in parallel with (or in place of) the thermostat, then it would be using the same relay and fuse? I have the oil temp gauge on order and am going to install the new to come out Ultracool oil cooler with a fan. I spend a lot of time in Myrtle Beach traffic.

Since I have not done what your asking to do, looking at the wiring diagram I sent you for the parade fan it might be possible to tap into the #5 wire harness.

There are 2 wires going to the thermostat on the back of your air cleaner backing plate. You might try stripping back some of the wire cover on both and put a jumper wire between the 2 and then turn on your ignition to see if the fan would start running. I guessing the thermostat acts a contact switch when closed to allow the voltage to pass to run the fan and when open it keeps the fan off.

If this works, you would only have to install a switch (with no power) to act as a manual bypass from the thermostat sensor.

I dont know if they have resolved the leak issues several guys have had with the Ultracool oil cooler but they have had problems with them leaking due to the poor design of the fittings going in the cooler.

If you havent bought it yet I think Jagg oil coolers is coming out with a oil cooler that has a fan for touring bikes. I have a OilBud oil cooler on mine. I have been very pleased with it .

Thanks again, What you said is what I'm talking about, I'll give this a try and let you know. Thanks for the info on the Ultracool. I talked with them this past week and Larry was very helpful. They are coming out with a new unit with more capacity and better looks, I'm going to wait and see what it looks like. Thanks again.

Are you guys talking about the engine fan that's mounted where the horn is located?
I was thinking on getting one to help cool down the engine, but a service writer told me that all it does is blow very hot air between the cylinders onto my right leg. Is that true - it sounds correct.

Yes it is, the fan does pull air from the left and blows it out towards the air cleaner. Unfortunately you do feel the heat on your right inner leg. But you have to look at its helping move the air between the cylinders to give your engine some air flow if your stuck in traffic and not moving at all.

The engine heat will still be felt without the fan because we are basically sitting on top of it.

My response to your service writer. Parade fan mounted on left side. Blows air from left side between the cyclinders and out the right side. (which is were your leg is) The air is hot coming out the right side. SOUNDS LIKE THE FAN IS WORKING AS IT IS SUPPOSE TO, TO ME. I have one and it does what it is designed to do. My oil temp guage verifies it.

Gorilla, then the service writer was correct in telling me not to get it. I don't need any more heat on my right leg then I already have. I'm trying to reduce the heat not increase it. I try to stay away from long traffic lights if I can.
Yes, it helps the engine, but sure isn't helping the rider.

GARYD just a FYI if you get a oil cooler with a fan on it, the effect will be almost the same. The hot air that is drawn out of the oil cooler will be blown back at and around the engine which you will still feel if there is no breeze to move the hot air away from the rider. This is part of the price you pay riding and getting stuck in traffic

I clicked on that page, but everything I see still says you have to buy the offset oil filter adapter. If I could take my existing HD off and install the Jagg using the same hoses and adapter I would consider one.

Way too expensive with the adapter, Ultracool is coming out a new unit in 3 or 4 weeks. I'll wait and see it.

I have the Jagg 10 row with fan mounted on my 11 Tri Glide and use it with the stock adapter. Originally ordered the Jagg adapter, however, it leaked so I sent it back. The cooler does work as advertised.

    Did the stock hoses fit?

Oil cooler with a fan. I never seen one. Who makes it? How does the fan keep from blocking the air going to the cooler? Might be something I'd be interested in.

There was a guy from a Harley dealer on Goss's Garage on Motor Week last week talking about motorcycle oil coolers. He said contrary to popular belief, an oil cooler still cools the oil even when standing still. Not as much as when moving, but still cools.

Lakeman, how often do you let your leg heal? Doesn't sound very comfortably - especially if you have to do it over and over and over again.

I'm not ready to sacrifice my leg so the engine can run a little cooler.

If all else fails, I'll buy a Vespa or some other scooter with the engine in the back.
