    Default Security System Smart Siren

I purchased the siren for the security system on the trike today. Does anyone have this, like, dislike or any opinions?

I have it on my Triglide and it is a bit of a pain in the azz. Remember to always turn your trike on IN GEAR and with the clutch out or the alarm will sound. This is a quirk of the Trike, bikes don't have to do this. I forget sometimes and get a wake up call! Thanks, Jerry

How did you figure this out. My trike is a 2005 Ultra Classic/Lehman conversion so I have the key fob. Is yours the auto set?

The Triglides are auto set. I don't believe you will have the same problem as us because you arm and disarm with a key fob. I had an 06 Ultra and I liked that system better.

Yes, thats my thinking. I should have said that I have the key fob with the button and I think yours doesn't have the button and is auto set. If yours is still under warranty what does HD say?

    Jerry,

Where did you get this info? I recently ran into a problem with my siren that took me a little while to figure out.

Bike is a 2012 TriGlide with the OEM alarm system and Smart Siren II (along with the remote pager).

While getting ready to work on the bike a few weeks ago, I found myself unable to disarm the alarm system, or so I thought. Whenever I put the ignition switch to "ignition," the siren immediately started blaring as if it didn't recognize the presence of the fob. (I can't say for sure, but I believe the bike was in neutral.)

I repeatedly tried both fobs (with fresh batteries) as well as the PIN code. I would be able to enter the PIN code but as soon as I entered the fifth digit, the siren would blare. What I finally realized was that the bike was disarming but the siren was not shutting off.

I determined this by observing the alarm system indicator on the speedo and the fact that I was able to start the bike with no problem.

I finally removed the siren from the bike (all the while blaring away) and removed the 9-volt battery to quiet it.

I have not yet reinstalled the siren for fear that it would work now only to activate later without me being able to quiet it without a roadside removal.

I have not talked with HD on the issue. I bought the siren mail-order and I don't have the greatest confidence in my local techs.

Nope, comes with the Security System but the siren is an add-on accessory.

Certainly glad it's not standard! Just another annoyance.

I have an 09 Tiglide with the Smart Siren. The Trike needs to be in 1st gear and the clutch engaged when you turn on the ignition switch. If it isn't the siren will blare and won't quit until you shut it off. Once you have turned on the ignition you can disengage the clutch and start the bike. Alot of dealers do not know this. Not many trikes have the Smart Siren as they are an option.

Sir - Do you have any documentation anywhere (or is this in the service or owner's manual) explaining this requirement? Like I mentioned earlier, I don't have the greatest confidence in the knowledge of my local techs, but that might just be me.

Perhaps I'll reinstall the siren this weekend and see if I can duplicate the problem / confirm the need to have the trike in gear before turning on the ignition.

I'll be honest and state that 99% of the time, the bike is parked while left in first gear. When getting ready to start the bike, I turn on the ignition, shift it into neutral, and then fire the motor.

When I got my '10 TG initially, I had the Smart Siren II with remote alarm. It turns out, (per H-D) that the remote part won't work with trikes. I left the siren part. Most of the time I can just start the trike if key-fob is within a couple of feet of trike. Usually if I had radio on, then turn off, then try and start. That causes alarm to go off. Sometimes I have to pull in clutch to start, even if in neutral. Sometimes I just flip ignition switch back to off, then on again and I can start. I should note that H-D refunded me the difference between remote and non-remote versions. Also note that it takes quite a bit to actually set off alarm if no key-fob present. I have smart ass friends wo have sat down on trike and alarm didn't go off. I usually have to rock it pretty good to do it.
At least engine is disabled. I am on the road alot in many hotels.

There are times where you have it in 1st gear and for some odd reason it doesn't register that it is in gear which will make the siren scream. I've found when this happens turn the ignition off and rock the trike. My normal habit is to shut the trike off in 1st gear and leave it that way. When I get on to ride I turn on the ignition and wait for the chirp indicating it is disarmed, then you can put it in neutral, pull in the clutch or do what ever you wish and the siren will not scream. When you shut the ignition off you will get the double chirp which indicates the system is armed, you will also notice the turn signals will blink twice with when you get the double chirp when the system arms and blink once with the single chirp when the system disarms. Your experience where you had to remove the siren while it screamed away happened to me and my dad when he 1st took delivery of his Triglide. At that time both the dealer and us did not know how the system worked, after learning that HD treats the TTSM on a Triglide as a Side Car equipped bike did we learn what made it tick.

You should be able to put your siren back in and not have any problems, the dealer doesn't have to do anything special to your Triglide. When I took delivery of my 2010 I installed my own siren and it has worked like it is supposed to.

Both my dad and I also use the Smart Pager with our alarms and it works like a champ, if the siren goes off the pagers starts beeping and vibrating. I use the pager for when I'm parked at the hotel for the night. You will notice that it does take a pretty good rock to make the siren go off, but try and load it on a trailer without the fob and see what happens, it'll scream to high heavens. If you would ever trailer the trike you want to put the fob in the trunk or tour-pak other wise every time the trailer bounces or rocks the siren will start screaming.

I have no documentation nor is it listed in the service or owners manual. Reinstall it and let us know how you makeout. I have had my Trike worked on at several dealers and I had to explain to them how to start it without the siren screaming. Most folks do not have the smart siren.

Well, Just for the benefit of anyone else that might go through this problem. TT408 was issued on June 18, 2009 that covers this problem. This is the text of that bulletin.

Due to the fact that the Tri-Glide and sidecar models utilize a remote bank angle sensor in addition to the HFSM, The siren functions slightly different than other models.

if a siren is installed on Tri-Glide or Sidecar equipped vehicles, the siren may sound when the ignition switch is turned on, even if the security system is disarmed. This will only happen if the transmission is in neutral or the clutch is pulled in.

To prevent the siren from sounding at key-on, be sure that the transmission is in gear when you turn the ignition switch to "ignition". You can then shift the transmission to neutral for start up and the siren will remain silent.
