I can comment first-hand about this. I had a 1989 Wing trike - we loved it. In fact, my wife and I had matching 89s. We sold the trike back in 2004 when the kids said, hey, we want to take the car while you guys are out on the motorcycle.

Bike/trike was worry free. Think we had about 68,000 miles on it when we sold it. In the 15 years we had it, we only replaced the battery a few things and of course, tires. The rear tires were replaced just once. The front tire, more often. We did however run a rear motorcycle tire on the front (backwards). Oil changes - usually once a year - at the beginning of the season.

We had as MotorTrike conversion. I might suggest that you make sure there is a rake on the front - if not there, I suggest you get one.

Bottom line - we had a great experience.

Hello & :welcome:to Trike Talk. :clapping:

May I ask one important, what brand of conversion is on it? As a number of companies have folded and parts are impossible to obtain.

Good for you for asking questions before purchase.

I had a 2008 GL1800 Motor Trike kit. Never a bit of problem with the bike or the trike kit. Loved it. Rode it 12 years. Motor Trike is still in business.

At the same time we had a Lehman Monarch II trike kit on the other GL1800. Handled great.. never any problems with bike or kit. Rode it 6 years.

So.. life changes and it came time to sell one of the trikes. On very good advice I let the Lehman go. Absolutely nothing wrong with that trike but I was afraid there would come a time. Lehman was out of business and parts were becoming hard to find. So glad I followed that advice.

Life changed 6 years later and there was no one within 300 miles to service the Motor Trike. Nothing wrong with it but I was a stickler for service for it which ended when my independent mechanic decided he was quitting business. I reluctantly sold the Motor Trike and bought a 2021 Spyder RTL with all the bells and whistles the Gold Wing had.. and the dealer is just down the road 42 miles with a sub-dealer right here in town. So far, so good.. totally different animal but as comfortable and easy handling as the Gold Wing Motor Trike.

I had a 97 wing with a Roadsmith conversion. I had a problem with the cooling system and the fans not coming on. Turned out to be a simple fix that I ended up doing myself but the Honda dealer refused to work on it and parts were hard to come by. I may be wrong but I believe that Honda doesn’t manufacture parts for bikes over 10 years old. That convinced me to trade it in for a newer model. The last thing I wanted was to be scrambling for parts and trying to find someone to work on it. These are things to consider when buying an older bike. No offense to anyone who owns one. I’m sure they’re great bikes especially if you do your own wrenching which I don’t. All I want to do is ride and let someone else do the hard work.
