Good news ... installing an aftermarket starter can save a few hundred dollars.

Bad news ... most aftermarket starters often fail shortly after, and some sheer their hold pin. If that happens, the engine needs removed and the metal found.

Good news ... on this one, with the engine out, and the rear case removed, the metal was quickly found.

Bad news ... if the metal is not found under the rear case, then the engine needs completely disassembled which quickly increases the repair cost by another $1,000 to $2,000 more.

Good news ... on this one he was lucky. Once the engine was pulled and the rear case removed, the lost metal was quickly retrieved. His bill was just under $5,900.

Bad news ... sometimes we have to do a similar repair when someone installes and aftermarket alternator.

The take away ... on 5th gens, if repair costs and down time are an important consideration, it's often far cheeper and quicker to install OEM parts.

I agree on this one. Several years ago I had a starter quit on my 2002 Goldwing. Went to ebay bought a starter few days later it showed up. Installed it and all was supposed to be good. Rode it to work and back the next day, parked it and came out the next morning and bike was sitting in a pool of oil. Pulled it back apart and replaced the oring. Same thing oil puddle again. removed it checked it against a new Honda oem started the snout was several thousands on an inch different. Pain in the butt and a lot of work. And ended up costing me more money could not send aftermarket back because it had been used. OEM parts only for me!!!
