I have seen this problem in some years of ford products particularly around the 2000 plus models.

I see it more in a door lock than an ignition.

The white grease they used for lubrication hardens up.

Perhaps get some electric contact cleaner ( be sure it is the type that is instant dry and doesn't damage wiring).

Follow with just a small shot of dry lubricant, Maybe put it on your key and work it a bit?

Hello

earlier this year I had this problem and I was also having a problem with the accy. position not working. took off the module 2 screws and a plug in. cleaned up with electric and motor cleaner. the switch was really dirty inside, cleaned up nice and the mechanism worked smooth, key when operated returned just like new. this did not fix my problem so I bought a new module and installed it, still did not fix the problem. took part of the steering column apart, I found that there is a arm with a roll pin that breaks. this arm controls movement for the different positions. I bought the switch from ford as it had to be ordered and cost 50 dollars.
