My wife and I were heading home from a nice day of riding the trike. Was heading down the river drive in the town next to ours. Had to stop at a red light. There was one of those large-tall delivery vans in the lane over from me. Couldn't see through him if I wanted to. Anyway the light turned green. The van didn't go, but I did. Luckily by the grace of God, I looked over after I started to move though the intersection, this car came speeding by. He definitely ran a red light. I slammed on my brakes and He just missed me by about a foot or less. Thank God this new 2017 TriGlide had awesome Brakes. Stopped me in about 3 inches. Be careful and observant folks.

I'm thinking that the guy in the van saw this idiot was not going to stop, and that's why he didn't move. When I started to move, I looked over to the van just to see if he was going to move. That's when I saw the car coming through. Just glad I had the wits to slam on my brake. Thanks for all the hint's about waiting a few seconds before moving. I should have waited for the van to move since I couldn't see around him. I am always scanning the intersections, but It only takes one lapse of judgment to ruin the rest of your life. I'm very glad that I didn't hurt my wife. Thank you all. And Yes, the good lord was watching over us.

If he didn't we wouldn't last a week out there on a bike or trike...:xzqxz:

I had almost the same thing happen a while back. Sitting at stop light, white Chevy truck to the right of me, I was going to turn left. Light changed and I couldn't see to the right because of the big ole Chevy. For some reason I hesitated and sure enough a car runs the light making a left turn directly in front of me. Wow what a difference a few seconds makes. The first thing out of my mouth was, "Thank you Lord. You did it again." Ya'll be safe, Rev.J

I can relate. Every day I've been able to ride this past week or so I've had to test the brakes on the Prowler (and my temper) to keep from running over, or being hit by, some idiot who's being stupid. I've already had one 'big one' and do not care to repeat the experience. Was hit while driving a pickup in a situation just like you're describing. Now I figure someone blocking my view and still sitting after the light has turned green is doing so for a reason. I wait.

Glad to hear that it worked out for you and good brakes and reaction time, I always try to look out for the cagers, seems they have a blind eye for 2 wheelers and on 3 wheels you would think they would see you. Guess it pays when you have something blocking your view to wait, in this the case the big van, glad you are ok

All for now Trampas

Yep...in Midland you just sit there and wait until everybody is sitting still then you can proceed....but you still have to watch for the idiot on your right trying to sneak in a "right on red", turning to his right, but usually does not stay in his lane and winds up coming at you in your lane. :gah:

The trafic light at the center of my town [Only two lights in town] has a left turn arrow , And i can't tell you how many times when i'm making the left turn, An on coming car sees the green arrow turn on and starts to go even though their light is still Red.. ...:gah:

Yep, I see that happen all the time too.

I've long assumed (one of the rare instances where assuming does not make and ass out of you and me) that everyone is out to get me....from cagers, to truckers, to animals, to road repair crews, to whoever might have made or worked on my trike...they are all out to get me, and I need to guard against them all! haha

My dad once asked me if being on guard all the time takes the joy out of riding, and I thought about that. It really doesn't, being on guard becomes second nature and is not a big distraction.

In our area, two other big road hazards that I adjust my riding for:

1. Coming over the top of a blind hill...never know who or what may be in the road on the other side. Slow moving tractor, stalled car, or like I experienced just a few days ago...a construction crew with gravel spread across both lanes. Nope, they were not bright enough to have a flagger at the top of the hill...he was on the other side, where it was too late if you were going the speed limit.

Because of situations like that, I always slow down a bit when coming to a blind hilltop.

2. Blind curves...never know when a car may come around that blind curve in your lane! It's happened to me a few times. By slowing down going into a blind curve, it gives more time to react and avoid someone in your lane.

Gotta be careful out there!

Kevin
