Glodwing 1500 clunk

Goldwing 1500 clunk

I'm still seaching for a Goldwing trike. Looked at one today, it was 1989, with about 22,000 miles on it. It was triked in 2003 with a Hannigan, with 2500 miles added since them. It is in spotless/mint condition. However, there is a mechnical/metal clunk when the engine is reved high and then lowered rather quickly. It occurs in neutral, standing still or in gear and on the road. It seems to come from either the back of the engine or even near where the headers meet the exhaust. The owner says its the exhaust...but sounds too metallic. A little concerned it might be the trannie, although nothing leads me to beleve the bike has been abused. I am not familiar with Goldwing engines and the noises they make or shouldn't make. Any thoughts?

If you are talking about stabing the throttle . Like quick on and off, it will pop. My 97 will. If you are going down the road and give it full throttle will it take off? Or does it buck ? Only thing if not exhaust pop. Could be timing belt.

You may want to check the alternator dampeners. Mine 99 Goldwing sounded like a knock it the motor and one of the dampeners broke.

The 1500 Wing had weak transmissions from '88 to '92. Fourth gear could be weak, I've seen many with this condition. '93 to '96 were good, very few problems. '97 and later were about bullet-proof.

This has been my experiences buying & selling wings over the years.

Thanks for all the replies...it's not a decel pop...I get that on rare occasions with my VTX 1800---it's a definite metallic clunk, either in gear or out, moving or not, and only when I rev the engine and let it down quickly.

Dont play a quessing game on a bike that old that you are thinking about buying.See if seller would have it checked at a good shop first.Getting harder to find a shop that will work on a Goldwing that old should it be something major.

</div>I hear ya...I have a hard time wrapping my mind around buying a 24-year-old bike, even if it only has 24,000. From what others have suggested, sounds like a problem that might involved removing the engine, or at least some tupperware teardown..can't be too cheap to do that. I'm a decent wrench, but I know my limitations.
