Greetings!

Just bought a 2008 black Goldwing/CSC trike with only 5,100 miles on it. Wonderful bike--this after riding a 2001 Goldwing two-up for 13 years and 75,000 miles. Bad knee, sketchy hip, turned 65. Time to trike. Turned out it was easy to switch from bike to trike. I was expecting it to be more challenging. Great fun.

A question about the 2008 Goldwing/California Sidecar setup: I see that some members have had problems with the driveshaft and that a fix is available from Mountain Trikes. How prevalent is this problem? How would I know that my trike is vulnerable?

Are all 2008's?

Or just some?

For those of you who work on the drive train of your trikes, how do you gain access to the undercarriage? Do you use ramps on the two rear wheels and back up? Other methods?

Thanks, Stan Lapidus

Greetings Slapidus. Missed by THAT much. Everyone is just riding back from Trike Talk Northeast rally in W. Dover, VT. Keep it in mind for next year. Great time by all.

Hello Stan and welcome to the website from the U.P. of Michigan. The only problem with the drive line that I know of is lack of lubrication. When the rear tires are changed on the bikes the splines are lubricated as it was reassembled. Now that you have a trike the splines need lubrication yet. Some manufacturers will drill and tap two grease fittings into the drive shaft and both fittings need to be greased. If not, then you will either have to do it yourself or pay someone to do it. If you are any kind of mechanical ability, you can remove the shaft. You will need to jack up the rear end as high as you can get and use jack stands to secure it, also block the front tire on both sides. You can then remove the drive shaft, keeping track which end goes where.

Once you get it out, if you are doing the work, set it on a drillpress or bench vice, use a center punch mark twice, one each on opposite sides.

Scribe a mark down both pieces of the shaft, then separate the two shafts. Using your center punch marks, drill proper size for a tap to fit your fitting. Us an air gun blow all shavings out from the inside of the shaft. Reassemble the shafts using your scribe to assure alignment. Using Honda Moly grease, pump grease until it just starts to come out of a seam. Install back on your trike, and you are good to go.

Welcome from another newcomer in NH. Going from two wheels to three has been more of a challenge than I expected. But getting more comfortable now.

Welcome to Trike Talk from SE Missouri. Glad you found us and ride safe and have fun. A friend of mine has a 08 Goldwing with CSC and the drive shaft had to be reweld. You should be able to get with a CSC dealer and the company should repair the driveshaft. CSC came out with a new driveshaft but the company would not replace the old driveshaft with the new driveshaft but they did fix the current driveshaft. Hope this helps.
