Air Bag Compressor

I need some help. My air bag compressor quit working. It blew a fuse yesterday. The motor is getting very hot. At first I thought it was the rocker switch because it doesn't click into place when pushing it to increase or decrease pressure. It will work to lower the pressure, it's now at zero, but not increase it. It won't pump it up to the default 15 pounds. I'm thinking it's getting power to do that because the motor is hot. Any suggestions? Thx Rick

Rick if the motor is hot and not working it sounds like a short yo me. You can try taking the motor apart to see what the issue might be, but I expect you are going to end up rigging up a replacement. Good Luck

Thanks Ted. Any suggestions on where I can find a motor? The rocker switch doesn't seem like it will be a problem as there are several on Amazon and other places. I did tap on the motor and now it doesn't seem to be getting hot anymore, but it still won't run. I'm pretty sure the rocker switch isn't making very good contact as I've been having problems, but the motor should still run to pump it up to 12-15 pounds when the key is turned on.

I probably have a couple of problems. I'll pull the motor out and see if I see a lose wire or something else under the cover. It looks like it may be fun as two of the phillips head mounting screws are under the cross tube. TMS must have put everything together and then welded the compressor mounting bracket to the tube.

Sorry Rick no suggestions except maybe see if TBMS might still have one. If they do I expect it would be pricey. I think it should be rather easy to make up your own replacement. Might not have the auto inflate but they use pumps like that for air shocks on 2 wheelers. I put one on both my neighbors CVO that they wanted air suspension on. Power and a double throw switch along with the plumbing. If the rocker switch is still good then it really should be easy.

I'll give TBMS call to see if they have any suggestions on what else to check. I'll also ask them if I need to take out a loan to pay for another pump, if they have one.

Just a thought but, maybe try readjusting the pressure switch as it could be stuck. Remove rubber plug on bottom and allen wrench to adjust your start up pressure. Tomg

Good morning

I believe the compressor is a viair or something

like that they have many models to choose from.

kits are about 90 dollars. take it out and bench test it.

Thanks Tom. Since I'm not familiar with that adjustment, where is it located.

The silver cylinder with the yellow tag has the plug in the bottom, just put a flat blade screw driver under the rubber and pop it down and out. Allen wrench maybe a 5 or 6 mm or sae I don't remember. Hope this helps. Tom

Thanks Tom. I think the motor is shot. I put 12v to it and it did nothing. It does have a good ground. I'm going to order a new motor and switch. I got three out of the four screws out, but the back one by the head is a real bugger. I gave up when it hit 117degs. I have no idea how I'm going to get them back in. I sure wish there was a schematic on how the wiring got from the switch to the motor as the wires on the switch are different colors than over by the motor. Rick

That would be Vintage Air.

Mine has a different name on it than Viair, but it looks like a Viair 92. I ordered one including the switch. I don't have any voltage at the compressor when I turn the key on and when I do hit the switch, I only get between 8-9 volts. I'm thinking there must be a relay somewhere. Does anyone know how the circuit works and if there is a relay in it somewhere, where is it? The compressor still doesn't work when I put 12 volts to it. Thx Rick

Probably one that is under the seat on part of the frame rail that goes from left to right, mine had 3 relays attached there. Call Richard at TMS and ask him. Tom

I looked under the rail but I didn't see any relays. I'll have to look again. I called Richard yesterday and left a message. He didn't return my call. I just called now and no one answered the phone, it went to the answering service.

There used to be a thread on here on how to test the air system. it was from richard i think

the compressor is rebuildable. Did richard get back to ya

I didn't see anything about testing the system when I did a search. New compressor was only $90.00, so it wasn't worth rebuilding it. It's due here Saturday. I think the compressor is shot because I couldn't get it to work putting 12v directly to it. I would like to make sure the rest of the system is working properly before I install it. Haven't heard from Richard. Rick

Does anyone know how this circuit works? I called Richard two days in a row and left messages with no return call. I guess we may be on our own with our machines. Rick
