front coil overs for a 700 lb front end with leading link. help question

magoo, did you try the VW coil over shocks.. I was thinking of trying them when the bucks come in. :(

no I didn't butch

i looked at dune-buggy stuff all had too much travel and were to long- most sites couldn't tell me how strong springs where- something for front of a rear engine stock vw might be the ticket!! didn't think of that in the past. anything stronger than 115 lbs. per inch is going to ride like a lumber wagon- in my opinion- like I said before I want 4-6 inch of travel 1 1/2 -2 inch compression from trike weight and 2,&1/2'' - 4 '' for the road. I am 90 % sure I won't like the shocks I have on it now- front end only compresses 1/2 inch when I put trike weight on it -550 lbs in 1/2 inch is about 500 per inch per shock @ the angel they are at on my trike I think:confused:- want my shocks to compress a couple inches on bumps -soft ride is what im look'n for - but time will tell now that I'm thinking about it I could rig up a way to measure shock spring rate using one of the scales I used while weighing trike-kind of like a large valve spring checker:xzqxz:. will take a while but i'll check mine- I have 3 sets I think only the ones on trike are air shocks cant recall.

My brother-in-law gave me a pair of shocks off a harley he had. Look like the ones u have and take air. he claims they should work as he and my sister push close to 600lbs lol.I hate to weld up brackets and not work. For some reason i had to put my axle 6 1/2 inchs from pivot bolt to get 2 1/4 inch trail. That is center to center of axle and pivot bolt.. Some where i missed a measurement lol..

what degree is the neck set at with trike at ride height?
magoo

Magoo. it looks like 36 or 37 on the angle finder i have. This is where im at. You can see first set of bushed pivot holes at front of wheel.. These where at 5 1/2 inchs that gave me 1 1/2 inch trail. I have not measured the trail at 6 1/2 inchs.. Im thinking it should put me at 3 1/2 trail.. I THINK

Boy if i had as much cash as i have stupidity, I would be rich.. All this time im boring holes, reaming holes and all the time thinking im going in the right direction for trail. WRONG i was going negative trail:blush:.. So after reading and reading and checking out magoos leading link it finally hit me.. wrong way you dumb azz .. so after all is said and done i finally have 2 1/4 inch trail. Now the center of my rocker pivot hole is 3 1/2 inchs from center of axle.. Not sure how that will work with the shock travel and if it will mean a stiff ride..

hey your ok butch!!

hang in there

!! this stuff is confusing thats all.

I took mine apart this morning and measured it for you-and was going to pm you about do'n little checking as your set up is vary close to mine,,,,, and now so are your measurement;)s good job!!-cant wait to see it finished up!!!

and as far as stiff ride worse case scenario we change shocks

hey if my trike is done and all I need to make it right is 400 bucks worth of shocks I'm in!!

I found springs clear down to 80lbs. per inch now!!

mike

Magoo, springs down to 80 lbs. Is that for the QA1 shocks?. I Set up a harley shock in my drill press and compressed it with the press. It did not seem to take much effort to to crank it down, a lot less than i expected.. Thanks for the support. lol

hi butch

they were 2&1/2 inch id springs 10 long can't remember the brand name but the right size they were not chrome but as I said 100-115 is good for my trike. also you have to remember that when you set a shock in at 36-38 degree you divide by .66 so for 100 shock

100/.66=151 lbs times 2 shocks =302 lbs per inch of compression,,, it adds up

magoo

Ok finally some progress. I crudely mounted the air harley shocks to the forks. I was so happy to see that when i tacked the lower shock mounts over the axel and clamped the shocks in place on forks found that i have plenty of travel and lift with no air to shocks. I jacked the front so tire was in air and clamped shocks to forks with a good ol obumer rigging. pictures are with full weight of trike on shocks ..So Mr magoo does it look like im on the right track or will this cause bounce

look'n good!!

I leveled link with trike frame at angel / proper riding height/distance to floor and then tacked mounts in place then raised front end of link to what I thought total travel would be and checked to make sure shock would not contact lower legs then I just played around until I liked the looks of shock on tube- in my case I moved the shock away from tube as I liked the look...

glad things are coming together for ya butch!!

nice workThumbUp

I just picked up the back loop for the fork rockers to tie them together as was recommended by Mr Magoo.. I about fell over when they hit me for 160 bucks but it is what i wanted.lol Keep in mind it is only 2inch by 3/8 steel with a 5 inch radius. Thought i got hosed just a little but i could not bend it myself

here is a couple pics of my progress so far. The fender i had to split down the middle and widen it 1-1/2 so it would fit the harley wheel. Still have to add side fender brackets and brakes..

700 LB Front End

It all looks great---but---if that is a front tire, I would suggest that you change it to a rear tire.

A front tire handles a lot less weight than a rear tire.

Ride safe---there is a lot of idiots out there!

Oh yea, I have the the forks done with mocking up. Just now working on dash before i take it all apart and finish welding and paint the neck , dash and forks. The suspension works perfectly. I step on trike and have movement lol.. I have 13 lbs of air in shocks....I have the problem like you had with flaring to high but am going to leave it..Thinking of filling in above fender with lights or something

Still loads of work left, like wiring , finding info on brake lines , welding and prep and paint and reassemble . I do not have calipers bolted up but the mounts and welding for them is done. Just a pain to take off as i have to remove them to pull the wheel out
