HD's new 131 cu. in. Crate Motor

I wonder how the drive belt and other drive line components will hold up with this motor and the additional torque. If you install this motor in say a 2017 that is out of factory warranty I assume the warranty you get with the new motor is only covering the motor. What if you had purchased the extended warranty when you bought your bike and then install this motor later? Does your extended warranty stay in effect? Just some questions that come to mind about existing driveline components, warranty, etc. Sure would be fun to have one!

Has anyone seen any disclaimer saying does not fit Tri Glide or Freewheeler. If there is one then by installing it that could void your power train warranty, but it would be a blast in a trike.

The 131 cubic-inch (2147cc) V-Twin – available in both oil-cooled and twin-cooled – is a bolt-in replacement for 2017 and later Touring models that were originally equipped with a Milwaukee-Eight Oil-Cooled or Twin-Cooled engines (Road Glide, Street Glide, Road King, Ultra Limited, Electra Glide). The 131 does not fit into the Trike models.

And that may be only because H-D did not get it EPA certified in the trike models.

On YouTube today I watched a vlog on the 131 engine. They warned about the restrictor that cuts in at 110miles an hour I think it was. Now I’d have no plans to get to that speed but they were saying customers hadn’t been pre warned and some were not happy.

re the 131

If I remember correctly, a Power Vision can remove the speed limit / governor no problem. Since you'd be going outside of warranty territory with the 131 anyway, it seems like that wouldn't be a problem.

I really wanted to drop a 131 in my new 2020 FLRT but a Harley master mechanic I trust talked me out of it. He said that he didn't think the rear end was made to handle the increased torque, and -- I can't remember what the fitment aspect was, I think it was something about the head pipe coming out of a 131 didn't line up on the trike, and you'd need to do something custom to deal with it. I heard the part about the head pipe from a mechanic at a second Harley dealer as well.

In the end I am going to have to be satisfied with an aggressive Stage II running Power Vision, hi-flow air cleaner from DK's, a Jackpot header and 4" cans from FuelMoto, and I'm putting a Wood's 22X cam in it. I'll report back although I hear there are not many trike dynos in STL so I don't know if I'll get real stats. I just wanted a lot of oomph off the line and a scream from the exhaust ..

If I had thought everything through more carefully .. and not impulse bought the FreeWheeler, I probably would have done a conversion from another Harley using a kit. Either upgraded another Softail or Touring to the 131 and then bolted on one of the probably higher quality trike rear ends from Paughco -- they are based on Dana axles so if I had to bet they could handle the output .. I would .. I'd have gone with a wheel assembly based on 5 lugnuts instead of 4 to handle the increased torque .. and instead of the trunk I would have gone with something like the Frankenstein that just showcases the transfer case.

This is the problem with being a gearhead .. you can always do something crazier. Best of luck. Wheel side down :Coffee:

Has anyone looked at the S&S 128 big bore kit. It provides more torque and HP than the SE 131 kit?

Id love to know if this has ever been fitted on a FW. I’ve added power duals headers and an Andrews 462 cam which has woken it up quite a bit.

I just ordered a fuel moto 128 kit ,woods 408 cam , screamin eagle 64mm throttle body , 5.5 injectors , screamin eagle ported intake , I had a set of screamin eagle ported heads ,jackpot 2.5 tripple x head pipe , I had a new S&S oil pump & cam plate , I got all a r p bolts , I dont no if I will wait till winter or do it now , busy at work now , should be 140 + torque . Cant wait . now I have a117 kit with a red shift 468 cam gutted cat S&S race mufflers , arlen ness big sucker ac , it goes really good . Fuel moto is really good people , give some good discounts. check them out

From what I’ve read, the 131 can produce way more than advertised. Biggest thing is that it is an epa motor, and such is limited. There have been several builds done with a different cam, exhaust etc and have produced good numbers. Doesn’t seem worth the $$$, as you can get a big bore kit from several companies for around $1700, and not have to deal with the title issues as well. Whether the trike differential can handle the torque from any build is the biggest question.

I don't know for sure what kind of torque the rear end can handle on an HD Trike, HOWEVER, I think it has more to do with how you ride than the peak torque.

The Tri Glide below is just shy of 110 ft. lbs. of torque, but as you can see we hammered on it pretty hard, never had any diff issues from dumping the clutch hundreds, if not thousands, of times. Frankly, I am surprised we never snapped the belt.

Dan it sounds like you are creating a monster.

It will be interesting to see your figures when it’s all fitted.

I guess you are not worried about the talk of too much torque at the rear end in big builds.

Im not to worried about the rear end ,I don't do dead stop wheelie's, or try to do burn out's. Im having a hard time to find somebody to tune it , not many trike dynos around. Kinda lucky I took it a part, rocker shafts have a little wear on them, replace them with JIM'S, the piston oiler's 2 were a half turn loose one was 2 turns loose. should get it running sunday , a lot of work , I hate takin off the the water pipe's and the upper rocker box. I added A Jim's force flow fan , a ultra cool oil cooler, aim clutch. Let you no when it's tuned . I think Harley quality right now is whey less than the A M F years ! How's it going in England , much covid over there ?

Excited to hear how this build turns out. I worked with the Fuelmoto guys too, agree they are great. Used Wood 22X cam, Jackpot black ceramic headers and high roller exhaust, Harley extreme breather intake and Power Vision. It’s got a lot of go but this build you are talking about sounds like a beast.

If I had to do it all over again I didn’t realize there was a whole world of custom rear ends like Mystery, Frankenstein, and Paughco. I would have bought some other Harley and put on a custom high output rear end so I could overdrive the crap out of it.

That said I rarely push the bike so maybe better my horsepower (i.e. money spent) was limited by that rear diff and the 4 bolt lugnuts that kept me from putting duallie tires on. :D

Lots of covid mate. My father in law has it bad at the moment. He works in a hospital so it’s not surprising. We have different rules in every bloody county, and as for the four nations, each country has different rules too. It’s a mess but at least the vaccine is rolled out now. It’s cost so much on so many businesses.

So here is a question..

If you were to build your own trike for max torque and HP, what model would you use, what trike kit, and what engine set up would you go for?

We are no better hear , look up how many are dying hear everyday I Know of at least 6 family and friends that have passed from it . My wife's mother was one of the first case's around hear, that was a very pain full death to watch . My niece works at a hospital in Springfield Mass she just had it with 11 more on her floor, she is over it thank god she is young and healthy . There are so many closed businesses and a lot more that will close . Just have to try and be careful , at are shop my wife runs around all day washing the door handle's, try to clean all the car's inside door handle's shifter's anything people may touch , she spray's the inside with some disinfectent then starts the car's put's the heater and defogger on and let it run for 15 minute's . Had a friend call the other day said he has covid wants to drop off his car for me to repair while he is in quarantine, I asked him if he was fing mental . There's to many people that don't believe it is real , they think it's the Goverment , the Chinese , Alien's . BE SAFE

You can put a 131 in a trike. The set up from HD works at sea level. My house is at 7,100ft, hence a different cam, and staying with the 55mm throttle body. Power Vision required as the SE tuner won't allow enough fuel. Used the map from a two wheeled build. Even then the map had to be sent to Dyno Jet so they could make it work with a Trike. Estimate (based on dyno runs on similar two wheel'd builds) is 140+lbs torque. Build was matched to existing V&H pipes that were on the trike. Passing on two lane highways no longer a problem.

Trike has DK Custom Products oil cooler and Mighty Mite fans.
