Prayers for Harley

Relapse, Bad

Last night Harley took a turn for the worse. He was having trouble breathing, very warm to the touch, very weak, and unable to walk. I took him out to do his business, but, before I could get him there he lost control of his urine and bowels. I'm hoping for the best, but, I've seen the last steps of death and that's what it looked like to me.

I called my friend the vet, he told me to meet him at his office, this was 3am. I brought Harley in and he put him back on IV, his fever was 105*. More antibiotics, and a sedative to allow him to rest. He allowed me to sat up with him until 0730, then he made me go home to get some rest.

I'm a wreck. Sleep is not coming anytime soon.

Vet of The Year

Just got a call from my vet .... he is gonna take Harley home with him and keep him on IV fluids until he gets better (he'll continue IV's and pain and anti inflammation drugs, I couldn't do that at home), he will give me update calls as necessary. He says the fact he's still hangin in there is a good sign, but, he's not out of the woods yet ... He also said, the IV's could continue for 2-4 days ... but I know he's in good hands. He said if he needs to keep him all weekend he will, probably bring him back Tuesday when he re opens. unless he gets better at which case he'll bring him to me.

Keep the prayers coming ... seems they are being answered,

Pancreatitis is very common in animals. In fact my cat gets a bout two to three times a year. I have to keep anti nausea medicine available so he doesn't dehydrate. The first time he had a bout it cost me $1,500 at the emergency vet!

Here he is, being just like dad!

I actually found the same article when the vet told me what it was ... not as bad as I envisioned ... I miss the little guy ... but, he is in the best place he could be. My Vet had a bout of throat cancer some time back and used to have radiation therapy, then come into his office to help animals. He wore himself to a frazzle and wouldn't let any of the Vets he knew help with his practice.

I used to go to the Vets house twice a week while he was doing radiation and take care of his pool. I continued for some time, because it felt right. I just felt anyone that dedicated to his "patients" deserved a hand when he needed it. He finally caught me one Wednesday, he'd caught up on his "patient" load and took his normal Wednesday afternoon off (He works 1/2 day Saturday, so working folks can get their pets treated). Anyway, he caught me vacuuming his pool and said, "I knew it, the pool always looked good when I checked it and I never needed to add chemicals". He tried to pay me, and I told him I didn't do it for him, I did it for his patients.

Probably why he keeps trying to give me free Vet services. We have been doing this back and forth thing for like twenty years. When my Weimereimer (-5sp) lost control of her hind end, couldn't walk, he had his staff work with her for like three weeks, and he boarded her. All he charged was $120 for food and meds. His office is full of animals he has saved when people either couldn't afford their treatment or just got tired of having a pet. He gets their permission to adopt them, saves them, then falls in love with them and keeps them until they reach end of life. He has a candle in his waiting room, he burns it all day when he looses a patent. Quite the guy, if I could find a Human Doctor like him, I'd be set.

I've been praying for him for years. :D

Tonight my prayer chain is going to be EXTRA long. I hope you get some rest tonight and Harley will be licking your face soon;)

The little guy is home ... not to spunky, but, very clingy. Not sure I'll be riding for awhile, not sure I'll leave him alone anytime soon.

When I got him there this morning, they said he had a 104.5* temp. I guess dogs typically run between 101.5* and 102.5* as normal. His white blood cell was was like 50% higher than normal. They did a full body inspection looking for bites, cuts, etc. They did X-rays looking for internal injuries (no charge), they gave him IV fluids and IV antibiotics. Just before I picked him up they gave him an antibiotic shot which is all he'll get until the morning.

He also came home with some high protein soft food to help him recover and more antibiotics (pills) to take for 10 days. We (Harley and I both) are whipped. We are going to hit the hay and hopefully he'll be a little better each day.

I need to get him in again in the morning, doc wants to take his temp again and check him over again (no charge). It's good to have a vet as a friend (used to work on his pool before he sold his house (no charge). I also did a pool inspection for the buyer (no charge).

Whe I picked Harley up, the nurse told me no charge, I left 2 $100 bills in their homeless pet jar ... :D

Alan....You're a good man.....Harley is lucky he has you.....ThumbUp...

Update

Well, just got a call from the vet ... Harley has not improved nor has he gotten worse. The fever is gone and he has had several IV’s, Antibiotics, and some sedatives. He has given him a small steroid does because sometime that will stimulate the pancreas ti calm down. He said he will touch base back with me later this afternoon, but, I didn’t hear from him until like 21:30 last night because he ended up doin an emergency surgery around 1800 yesterday. He said he’s doing some work at his rental next to his vet business (it’s a boarding area for pets) so he will check on Harley regularly.

He said if anything changes he will definitely call either positive or negative. Consider no news as neutral news.

Sorry this is kind of running on and not edited, but, I have mom at the store and am giving the update from my phone while she touches everything.

Thanks for the prayers and for continuing thought for him.

Rest In Peace Harley

Just heard from Jim ... Harley passed on his own between 3 am and 5 am ... Jim, my Vet, said he’s pretty sure Harley developed Meningitis from the infection and the brain shut down. He took a spinal fluid sample after he passed and it showed the Meningitis. He didn't want to tell me until he had some answers.

Jim also said he believes he was never in any pain and that the
meningitis shut down the voluntary part of the nervous system very early in this process. From that point on, it was just auto things that happened, breathing, heart, etc.

When I saw him yesterday, he was not the little dog I knew. I'll miss him.

I might be a little "missing" for awhile. I'm having him cremated and I will take him on a last ride ... then spread his ashes someplace nice.
