Ceramic Coating My Paint

Yes, gonna do the Sporty first, it'll be pretty easy. Then, when I feel really energetic (cause it's gonna be a big project) planning on doing the Tri Glide. Besides all the nooks and cranny's on the TG, I also have a bunch of 3M protectors on it that I am going to need to remove.

Kevin,

I also have paint protective film on my TG. I believe it was XPEL. I think they are probably all about the same, anyway when the ceramic coating was applied it was applied over the PPF. So far it is working out just fine. It repels water as well as the painted sections that are only painted.

I also use a wash to enhance the ceramic coating. I have only used it a couple times. Most of the time I just spray off the dirt and grime. As you stated each type of coating may be different.

I am jazzed

The "Kit" I ordered from McKey 37 will be here 2/9 ... I'm thinking I could sit in the chair .. do a small section as a time and not have to "overdue" the knee. At least I'll feel like I'm doing something constructive to

Jessica. :D ... Ya know smoothing her curves ... LOL

Good deal Alan. It's not really all that difficult. As I said the initial washing / cleaning was the most difficult and tedious part. Once you have it cleaned it's easy peasy.

My plan is to wipe it with a damp micro fiber towel, then I plan to clean it with a de waxer, if there are any little scratches or swirls, the kit I got includes a product for this. Then ... as I see it, you put a few drops on an applicator and wipe it on, it self levels, then dries and you're done. So by doing a small section at a time, I should be able to ensure I don't get in over my head with regards to the knee. :AGGHH:

I don't think you should risk it on Jessica.

When I come there for the 4 Corners Rally over Labor day weekend, You should test your process on my Freewheeler 1st, merely as a quality check.:D;)

Not impressed so far, took 11 days an a email to get it delivered.

When the Mckeys got here today this is what it was shipped in.

2019-02-09 19.03.13.jpg

When I opened it there was a roll of brown paper around a micro fiber towel around the product.

When I unrolled it, this is what I found.

2019-02-09 19.02.38.jpg

I was able to clean up two of the three bottles, and the micro fiber towel and applicator.

2019-02-09 19.04.17.jpg

The last one is toast. I found a container and used a long shop spoon to get all I could save into the other container.

Rinsed out the micro towel and applicator and they seem to of come clean. I did clean up the broken bottle so I could get the directions.

Okay ... whining over .. two question from people that have used this ceramic stuff.

1) Did I get the right stuff, I ordered what they recommended. This is the big question.

2019-02-09 19.42.46.jpg

2) Should I contact them and ask for money back or at least replace the product?

Egads, what a mess, think I'd stuff it all in a good sack and send it back. There has to be a better way. No way I'd be using what they sent, they need to make it right. Too bad Fuzz, just coming off knee surgery, and now this, you are not having a good day.

Labor Day .... LOL ... I'll be riding way before that (got March 1 as my goal date .. we'll see) .... but ... if your willing to be seen with a ... ya know ... wing 2 wheeler ... LOL ... I could do a day ride and have lunch or something with ya ... :D

Welp ... Patients is not my strong suit.

So yep ... woke this am at 5 ... like almost always .. and lo and behold ... there where the side covers and the chrome trim end caps. My mind being what it is ... I thought, while it is apart, why not protect it. So I did.

2019-02-10 05.27.36.jpg

Don't mind the fuzzy little ball above the side covers ... some where in that mess is Harley, my Yorkie, he's not a "morning person".

I don't think what I have is the ceramic stuff. The directions basically are like a standard Carnauba wax. Having said that. The whole process was almost as easy as the Honda spray wax, just with one extra step of wiping off any residue. There wasn't much since I rubbed it in pretty well. I think it looks Okay ... shinny even. We'll see how it holds up to weather.

That is messed up.

I well know that damage can happen during shipping, but that looks like it was packaged incorrectly, contributing to the likelihood that it would be damaged during shipment.

I would call them, even though you've used it some. They should help you out.

Regarding what you got...that is not what I used, nor do I believe it is what Jerry used.

What I got can be seen in the photo I posted previously in this thread-

Here's a link to it on Amazon-

https://smile.amazon.com/McKees-37-...spons&keywords=mckee's+37+paint+coating&psc=1

McKee's 37 paint coating is a Nano-glass ceramic coating that provides paint protection measured in years, not months. Formulated using Nano-glass ceramic particles and state-of-the-art cross-linking polymers, McKee's 37 paint coating creates a hard-as-nails protective barrier and a glass-like, liquid shine. The self-cleaning effect created by the immense amount of surface tension keeps your paint looking its best in between regular washes.

I also got some coating prep, specifically made to prep the paint prior to the ceramic coating. What I got can be seen at this link-

https://smile.amazon.com/McKees-37-...spons&keywords=mckee's+37+paint+coating&psc=1

I did not get the swirl remover. Of course, that would have been better to use the swirl remover, then the coating prep, and then the ceramic coating. I simply did not want to do that much work. :)

All that said, the results you showed looked nice, but I don't think they are meant to last for years like when you do the ceramic coating.

Ordered it from your Amazon lint .... another week isn't gonna kill me :AGGHH: ... what did you use to "dewax"? I wiped it well with isopropyl ..kind of mute now as I will have to do it again.

I sent McKee's a customer service message ... we'll see what they do.

Alan, they make a Coating Prep Polish which is what I used. Just google it and you can find it on Amazon also.

I dealt directly with McKee's and went 'all in' and bought their complete package - the 'Daily Driver' since I plan to do my SUV and maybe the wife's car.

https://www.mckees37.com/mk37-7100.html

The kit includes everything you need - all the prep products and the coating. The iron remover and the clay bar were really overkill for the TG but on the autos I think they will be worthwhile.

Give a call or drop an email to McKee's and communicate with Nick. He is very knowledgeable and informative. Good videos on their website also.

Update

Just got a return from my email. They are going to reship the entire order. I explained that only the one bottle was broken, but the said, "We always go above and beyond to make our customers happy."

Good customer service. Nice to see a company try to keep people happy. I actually liked the Swirl remover. Got most of the little "scratches".

The wax seemed really good too, just not what I thought I was getting.

So ... when you talk nice to these people ... they'll treat you nice too.

Update

McKee's has shipped new micro fiber towel, applicator and the jewel polish. Didn't use the other two and they were not damaged.

Next ... my ceramic sealer ordered off of Kevin's link will be here tomorrow. So, I did the fast polish on the front fender and de waxed it with alcohol and de waxed the side covers. I am ready to seal them. I will not touch them for 12 hours as stated in the instruction, even if it kills me. I plan on sealing them tomorrow after my therapy, then going to bed, well after Oak Island ... some one turned me on to that ... thanks paws ... it's become the high light of my week. (I can admit, the therapy kicks my bu$$. Either I'm getting old, or, the surgery has drained me ... or both :AGGHH:) I plan to install them Wednesday or Thursday morning, depends on when I get the fork brace on.

One question: I need to drill holes in the left side of the trunk to mount the cb antenna and drill holes in the trunk lid to mount the trunk rack.

1)Should I seal the paint first?

2)Drill and mount the items then seal.

3)Or, drill, test fit, remove .. then seal.

I'm thinking the third option.

+1 on option number 3 for my way of thinking... just sayin from the Ole Pennsylvanian

The ceramic stuff came today. Since the side panels and front fender parts where already prepped, I did the application. Hard to tell in the house how it came out ... gonna let them "cure" until tomorrow and I will take them outside and get some pics.
