I have posed this question to several of my friends and not gotten a good answer yet. maybe there is some one out there that can answer it.

if you have an auto shot gun with 2 3/4 in chambered barrel, and you buy a 3 in chambered barrel will it fit and if so can you now use 3 inch shells ?

Very Doubtful.
The Bolt has to cycle through the Receiver and don't believe those designed and produced for the 2 & 3/4 will accommodate the increased length shells for that Cycling to occur. Wouldn't open far enough to feed the 3" into the Barrel regardless of the Barrel's capacity to hold it.

the question was brought up because the receivers on Remington 1100 are not stamped 3 inch or what ever.
just the barrel. I guess you would have to look it up by ser # to be sure of what you had due to interchangeable barrels

Guess you could try one Shell and see. Should be able to tell by pulling the Bolt back and seeing if a 3"er would fit through into the Receiver.
Might be able to check with Rem by Serial #.

It is a Good Question.
One of those that makes ya go Hmmmmm ThumbUp

It is my understanding, after reading the FAQ on the Remington site, that on the 1100 the use of the 3" barrel is fine as long as you still use the 2 3/4" shells. I do this all the time. The 3" shells are not to be used in the 2 3/4" action.

However, I have a friend who has been using 3" shells in his 2 3/4" action for turkey hunting only for the last 10-12 years and his 1100 is still in one piece, but he does occasionally have a failure to eject properly.

Now that's the kind of post I like to read, facts instead of guessing. Way to many times people make posts that don't have any facts in them, it's just their guess. I like real facts.

Don't do it -- the remingtion is a good strong action but the 2 3/4 was not designed to handle the 3" shells!!!

thanks to all . You helped me decide what barrel to buy.

I bought a used 1100 and used it at a meat shoot over the week end. it preformed poorly. I was able to hit the target but with very few pellets . (I used the house mossburg pump and still won 5 lbs of bologna and cheese) I measured the bore and found it to be .718. the barrel (mod. choke should be .711. this old barrel has a ding in the side of it and I think I see it in the bore as well. time for a new barrel.
found several on e bay .

I chose a full choke which should be around .693 . a big difference.
this one is 2 3/4 chambered. there was another that was 3" but it was a little more money. thanks,
you guys saved me a few bucks.

Facts begin as Guesses.... ThumbUp

Maybe back in the caveman day's... We have evolved since then. Now we have engineers, computers and such not just sharp sticks to kill the beast with. Guns are used to set off explosive devices, best not guess. You learn things like that when you start reloading ammo. You guess there and things just might blow up in your face.

Hypothesis="Guess" based on observation, extrapolation, & experience.
Theory=Tested "Guess" that shows promise to be True.
Law=Fact based on proven Theory that began as a "Guess".

The basis of ALL Learning, Knowledge, Engineering and Science to this day.
No "Guessing"=Remain Cavemen.
Think I will continue to "Guess" ThumbUp

Think we are talking the same things just from a differing definition of "Guess".
Hope the above clears it up from my end.
Definitely NOT talking about some Idiot with a jack-a$$ Whim saying "Hey Ya'll, Watch THIS"

this is why I like to ask questions and compare answers before I guess. I call it research:wave4:

If your asking questions and comparing answers your not guessing your deciding. Big, big difference between guessing and deciding.

Im guessing that by posing the question to smart people that I will get a good pool of intelligent answers to my problem then I can go into the d part of r&d and develop a plan of action that I guess will be the right one to solve the problem.........I guess ? :xzqxz:

anyway, I bought a used 2 3/4 inch (not the 3 inch one so I wont guess wrong and have a catastrophic failure) chambered twelve ga . barrel and Im going to blow the hell out of something hoping the pattern is smaller than it was before. I will let you know if I made the right guess.

I won 5 lbs of bologna and 5 lbs of cheese last time with the old barrel. Next time the 10 lbs of pork steak is mine !

Just to beat this thread a little more, if you read this question and answer from the Remington FAQ section and read a little between the lines it seems to imply that on the 1100 you should only use a 2 3/4" barrel on a 2 3/4" receiver and the same for the 3". Good info though on the serial no. marking for the magnum models.

I'll let the guessers have this thread, I've just heard to many story's of hunters guessing they was shooting at a deer and ended up killing their hunting buddy.
