Air Bag Compressor

I got it out this morning and took the hose off. Turned it right side up. It sparked, started up and blew a bunch of stuff out the piston outlet. It still doesn't try to pump up to the 15 pounds that it should when you turn the key on. I can barely blow through the hose in both directions, so I think the check valve may have some garbage in it. I'm going to replace that too. I still need to figure out why it doesn't pump up when I turn the key on. Rick

Mine doesn't do anything until I press the switch. Never has pumped up automatically. It holds pressure for 2-3 days.

Here's what I've found out so far. The compressor wasn't pumping until I removed the hose and turned it head up. It sparked, blew some stuff out of the head and started working.

The pressure switch that is supposed to pump up the compressor when you turn the key on wasn't working. I jumped across it and the compressor started. The hose with the check valve in it is very hard to blow air through with the flow going to the manifold and it's the same blowing the opposite way, so I don't think the check valve is working.

The switch on the dashboard was intermittent. So far, I replaced the switch and it works now. I just received a new compressor and it has a check valve on it. I ordered a new hose without a check valve, Viair 92803. I have a new adjustable pressure switch coming from Amazon. Hopefully everything arrives this week and I'll be up and running next weekend.

I'm reading 435 pounds on the reading up front for the air bags now. I hope it's because I have everything apart.

I still have no idea where the relay is that operates everything as I don't think it's one of the ones under the crossbar as I removed all of them and everything in the back was still working and the wire numbers weren't the same.

Rick

I finally received all the parts and got it back together. I replaced the switch on the dash, you no longer heard a click when engaging it and it was operating intermittently. Now the compressor runs every time I push it. I replaced the compressor, it was locked up. I replaced the compressor line to the manifold. It was very hard to blow through in both directions. so I figured the check valve was stuck partially open. I replaced the pressure valve that turns on the compressor when you turn the key on, it wasn't doing anything when you turned the key on. I now have it set to pump up the bags to 16lbs when the key is turned on. The moral of the story is that everything works again. Yeah!

I still don't have a clue where the relay is that operates everything or where the wires go.

Rick

Just an update. I let it sit since last Saturday. I went out for a 200 mile breakfast ride this morning. I turned the key on and the compressor kicked on and off for about 1 second and the gauge was still at 16 pounds like I set it at last Saturday. I set it at 20 for the ride and it stayed there. I used to have to set it 6-8 pounds higher and it would fall back a couple of times before it would stabilize. I know everything I replaced was bad, but I'm thinking the pressure changing was caused by the air line check valve not sealing. Air was probably going back into the compressor and bleeding out the intake. If anyone wants to know where I got everything, just let me know.

Now I have a problem with the cruise control. The system turns on and when I push the set button, the dash light comes on. I hope the cruise control module is just stuck like it happened before. I don't think anything I had apart caused the problem unless the relays under the cross bar under the seat are for the cruise control and something happened to them when I had those apart thinking they had something to do with the compressor circuit.

Rick

Rick post the info on the compressor just in case someone needs it. nice to have it right there.

Those relays do not effect the cruise. If the system shows it's setting but not working I would look at the servo under the hood. Maybe the cable broke or something

Hello

I just got done dealing with cruise problem. there is a test where you can see what is wrong. with a selection series on the cruise buttons press on then within certain time press another button. don't remember series. Do your brake lights work, does horn work. i am thinking clockspring

Thanks, I have that test, but every time I've tried to use it I got funky results. Rick

Here's a list of parts I used and where I got them. The compressor, pressure switch and rocker switches came from Amazon and the SS air line came from Summit Racing because I couldn't find it on Amazon.

I got 2 of these so both switches would match.

Just for info, it was the module. It was full or rust. Luckily, I had a spare one from the last time I had a problem. That time cleaning and lubing it made it work so I kept one I purchased. Didn't work with this one.

Rick, is the module the unit that sits on the right side of the engine at the front with a cable attached? Thanks.

That's it. For some reason I'm not able to send pictures from my phone to the computer. If you need pictures of it, I can try again later when I get home from work. Rick

I believe the power comes from the power distribution box relay number 9 ignition switch 40a

Hello

did richard ever get back to you. it sure would be nice to have a schematic of this system as you cannot look it up in ranger wiring diagram:p. i went back and looked in our forum to see if mt ever answered any of the wiring problems with compressor. it doesn't look like anyone got their questions answered:confused:. i am having compressor and wiring problems now again.

Thanx

Dragon

I have a question should the purple wire to the switch have voltage or only when you press the switch on the dash. also i asked this before if anyone has changed the transducer out.

Thanx

Dragon
