Front tire Question

Since I got the GW Trike, my brother-in-law tells me that I should change the front tire. He tells me that I should put a car tire on the front. I think he may be right. Since I no longer need the grip of the sidewalls, I could get more grip on the road with the car tire. Anybody tried this - and if so, what results did you get?

Re: Front tire Question

I know several who put the rear tire of a motorcycle on the front of trikes don't know anyone using a car tire, not saying it cannot be done....

Re: Front tire Question

MANY experemented with the car tire ,, What size would u use. Has to be a very narrow tire

Re: Front tire Question

The only trike I know and have sen using a car tyre is the Dutch conversion EML. I think the Eurotrike conversion is a similiar style.
Personally I find the car tyre as ugly as sin and prefere the proper tyre on the front (Avon Cobra at the moment).
There has also been discussion of which way to run the tyre. In the Uk because of our cotton wool attitude we are not allowed to run a tyre the opposite way.
So the discussion goes on....

Re: tires

Thee's a pretty lengthy discussion about Michlin Pilot Active tires on the GW front over in the Manufacturer Specific / Honda section of the Forum under the thread "Pilot Active". There may be another thread covering this subject too, but that one does a good job on the "whys" & "what ifs".

Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

OK, just curious....I have had both Flats and Blowouts over the years on 2-wheelers, both front and rear tires....sometimes (most of the time) with no issues, then a few times, fairly disasterous outcomes. So far, I haven't had this experience on a Trike. Since some/most of You have been Trikin' much longer than myself, I assume this has happened on occasion. I'm wonderin' how the experiences went, and if Any of You have tips on successfully ridin' it out on three wheels.....in advance...THANKS.....:wtg:

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

So far I have been lucky I have never had a flat as a two wheeler are a trike, but I do carry a tire plug kit as well as a can of fix a flat and a 12 volt air compressor I bought at walmart for twelve dollars just in case.
:yes::yes::yes:

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

In all my years of riding 2 wheelers and now my Trike, I have never had a flat.
I always carry a plug kit, 2 cans of Fix-A-Flat and now a bottle jack for the Trike.

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

Don't think it would be even as bad as a car . I rode on a rear tire with only 10lb in it . If I did that with a car I would really fell it if I didn't pop it off the rim first . don't forget only about 400lb on each rear tire that was meant to support 2 times that

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

+1

Had them on two wheels. Last one was at 70 mph on a curve. Wasn't a fun ride.

This is what I assumed....and John, good point on the amount of weight ridin' on the Rears....Front seems to be the "worse idea" in my head...;)....I have an air compressor for inflation with a harness wired in to plug it into, and multiple plug kits.......prefer to have em' rot instead of put to use....

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

A couple of years ago, when I brought my trike out of winter storage, I checked the pressure in all the tires with (I thought) a good quality, dial type tester. I probably rode a few hundred miles and when I checked the pressure at the local tire shop, I discovered both the rear tires were at 12 lbs instead of the indicated 22 lbs. We double checked this with another tester and it was correct. I did not experience any particular change in the handling, but I certainly wouldn't recommend trying this.<br />
I also remember reading somewhere of a trike that had lost all the air pressure in one rear tire and still held up to riding. I highly recommend that you confirm that your tester is correctly calibrated. I am currently using a Michelin digital type, as I understand they are quite accurate.

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

I still use my Long Acre NASCAR Race Car guage at the House....out on the road, I carry a "cheapy", but by comparison to my Professional Version, I deduct 2 lbs......;)

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

 Ok...but I am still waiting for someone to tell us HOW to fix the flat. Yeah, we all carry the necessary tools / pumps. Great. On 2-w it was fine..sort of. But obviously we aren't gonna be able to pop off one ogf the wheels right? So is Fix-a-flat the only solution?

Re: Flat Tires on Trikes...Anyone had the experience...?

New to triking but plenty of flats on 2-wheels. I like the idea of carrying a bottle jack. I usually carry flat fix-it and a pump. Note that this won't work in the case of lining seperating from inner tire. Happened last year, I was already down to 30 mph when I lost everything (air wise). That's a tow.
I recommend the AMA Mo-Tow. I also got the tire warranty with the new trike that covers everything but wearing out.
