Winter Project

Thought I would share the progress of my winter project.

Found a 2005 Goldwing with a California Sidecar Cobra kit.

It only had 13,400 miles showing on the odometer, but was in need of a some fiberglass work.

My thinking was: Gee... a fun winter project. Could work on it this winter and have it ready to ride by spring.

Having the body off would give easy access to rework the running gear and install the auxiliary fuel tank.

Body off

Removing the body was not that difficult (it does take two people). Knew the running boards (Ground Effects) would have to be removed. But, quickly found out that the top trunk, it's mounting bracket and the exhaust system would also have to be removed.

Sounds like a great find! That 05 isn't even broken in yet. Make sure you post more pictures of your progress and welcome to Trike Talk. ThumbUp

Driveline

Noticed that there was slop in the driveline so ordered a new yoke, rzeppa joint and delrin disk before starting the project.

Removed the driveline and found that there was "No Delrin Disk". What!!!!! Not even a sign that one had been installed.

The tail end of the drive shaft had been wearing into the adaptor. The yoke and the rzeppa joint appeared to be ok. The slop in the driveline was from the front of the drive shaft being dangerously close to seperating from the yoke.

Auxiliary Fuel Tank

With the body off, it was fairly easy to disconnect the trike kit and lower it down so that the tank could be fitted into the frame.

The surprise here was when the main tank was opened up. Found a nozzle to a jerry jug. Guess that supports the idea of installing an auxiliary tank.
Put six gallons of fuel back in and no leaks.

Did notice, when test fitting the seat, that the seat pan did contact the vent line on the auxiliary tank. Modified the seat pan so that there would be no pressure on the vent line.

Body/Ground Effects Repair

None of the local autobody repair shops were eager to do fiberglass work, so took the body first to a boat repair shop to have the glass work done and then to a paint shop. The paint shop uses Dupont paint and is having a problem finding the formula for the 2005 Nova Blue. They may have to break down and order from U.S. Paint or ColorRite.

Chose to do the repair work on the running boards myself. Figured that they were going to be covered with a spray-on bed liner, so didn't need to be as perfect.

Suspension

Most of the suspension appeared in good shape. A hiem joint on one end of the mono shock had separated. Ordered a new joint and spanner wrench from QA1 and replaced the defective joint.

The Honda rear spring preload adjuster didn't start compressing the spring until the multi-display was showing "10". Took this opportunity to add more fluid to the system. It now starts compressing the spring at "1".

Changing the fluid in the differential was interesting. There is no drain plug. Stuck a 1/4" tube into the fill hole and ran it down until it was at the bottom of the differential. Put the other end of the tube in the vent hole of an older style jerry-jug and then used a shop-vac to create a vacuum in the jerry-jug. Don't laugh, it worked. One of the ideas gleaned from this forum.

Exhaust

Having to remove the exhaust system to get the body off does have a positive side effect. It made it easy to clean and repaint them. Used a high heat paint. Going to use anti-seize on them when they go back on. They were a bear to get off.
I found Honda uses the same colors on their cars and motorcycles. I found matching paint for a 04 candy black cherry and a 07 crucible orange from checking all the Honda color chips. Your blue may not be used the same year as your trike but, I'll bet you will find it on some year Honda car prior to the model year of the bike. These people a a lot less expensive than Color-Rite and have quality products.
