Here's a great project for you trikers out there. pepper

I need to take pictures of military vehicles, on permanent outside display(VFW, National Guard Armory, etc), for a HOG chapter program.

Tanks, jeeps, plaines, boats, helicopters, motorcycles, APC's, halftracks etc. Anything that could convey a military person. No canons

I will be staying overnight at these cities on my way back from Rolling Thunder to Chicago along the Skyline Dr/BRP/Cherohala Skyway = Arlington, Va., Waynesboro, Va., Sparta, NC., Cherokee, NC., Nashville, Tn., and Terre Haute, In.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I am leaving this Thursday - maybe I'll see some of you there. :wave4:

Red TriGlide(MARINE windshield decal), greying beard, black H-D t-shirt - I'll be hard to miss. :D :D :D

Thre is a really nice outside museum type display at Camp Atterbury, IN. It is about 30 miles south of Indianapolis off of US Route 31. It is west of Edinburg, IN on a state road.

Thanks Scalp Hunter, I forgot to add that I have to be in the picture holding our chapter challange book.

I thought a ton of riders would be telling me about their VFW post or something. I guess it's probably PC not to have any type of military item on the property any more, but there are a bunch of hold outs that I've found.

I can give you the location of 6 or 7 M-60a1's, but none of them are on your route. 2 in Maine, 2 in Louisiana, 2 in Texas, and one in Colorado. I make particular note of the M-60's since that was my ride.

Used to be a couple M-48's on the highway leading from Louisville to Ft. Knox.

There is also a display of several in the public access area of Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Thanks Tanker, you're right about being out of my way - just a little. :)

I was in 3rd Tanks in Vietnam. I still love the M48A1 - that's my all time favorite tank along with the B-17 as my favorite plane and the old USS Texas(dreadnought class battleship) as my favorite ship.

Rod69, I'm going right through Vincennes on the way home. I put it on my list - thanks.

Others may be able to confirm but there was a tank on display in Crossville Tn. at the hwy 70 junction. Will do some asking but there was a jet I believe was form the 60s at the entrance to Mark Anton Airport in Dayton Tn.I will try to verify its still there tomorrow. Also a helicopter at a park in Soddy Daisy,Tn. On old Dayton Pike.

There is a WWll landing ship moored at the river front in Evansville, IN., The USS LST 325.

Here is the web site- LST Memorial 325

It was in great shape the last time I was on it and there is a great history to it, including just getting back to Evansville.

Good to know, Izski326. I'm putting it on my list. Thanks

Where is the copter located- VFW? or?

The town of Mark is only around 400 population. At the only 4-way stop in center of town is a little veterans memorial park, with the helicopter mounted on pedestals like it is taking off. You turn off of Rt71 to the north about 1/4 mile and your there.

This won't help for your current situation, but Lexington, Nebraska has a great military museum. So, if you are ever in Nebraska (located along Interstate 80) you should stop in.

Here is the website for you to take a look at some of their pieces Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles - Lexington, Nebraska

We had the Confederate Air Force in our community several years ago and the Heartland Museum brought up vehicles to help with the Tora, Tora, Tora show put on by the Confederate Air Force.

We seem to have a lot in common. I loved the M60 series, which was pretty similar to the 48. B-17 is my favorite WWII aircraft (Dad was a Navigator on one in the 398th Bomb Grp flying out of Nuthampstead, England in 44-45, and I coughed up the bucks to take a 45 min flight on one when they came through the Houston area a couple years back), and I have in fact toured the USS Texas a couple times since it is so close.

I got quite a few pictures on my trip. The museum in Vincennes was great and so was Ft. Campbell.
Thanks to all for your help.

Well I tried, but all my pictures are waaaay to big for this forum. I can attach them to just about all my other forums - not this one.

We only get 19.5 kb here - all my pics are 2.1 mb ;)
