I need to change the oil tomorrow in preparation tor a weeklong trip.
Leaving Tuesday morning, 9th to ride up to Michigan for a granddaughter's wedding on the 13th. Then leaving Michigan Monday morning 15th, have to be back home to work and to baby sit the neighbors dogs while they go on vacation on the 17th.

I have both Amsoil 20w50 and Amsoil straight 60wt oil in the garage. Hot summertime heat long hours extended 4 lane. which oil would you use? Why?

Thanks
Ken

Ken. It doesn't get that hot in Michigan to run 60 weight. I'd check with my dealer and ask them what they think ! Just to be safe. I rode my HD out to AZ one summer. Changed oil when I got there to a heavier weight. Then before I left AZ I put 20 / 50 back in it. But it wasn't a trike either. Never hurts to see what the manufacturer has to say. Good luck. Where in Mi are you headed ?.............Rick

The Harley dealer up in Wisconsin told me NOT to run Amsoil, that it would cause my engine to blow up. He said I should only be running 20-50 Harley synthetic oil. He said all the engines they have come in with damage have had Amsoil run in them. This is the reason I have kept using Amsoil. :) I have used Amsoil 20-50 in all my motorcycles for years and never had a problem. Where do these yahoo's come from?

I run Amsoil 20/50 year round down here in Texas & the temps are normally 95-105 in the summer....no problems at all! My oil temp is consistently 200 deg F in the summer no matter how far I ride. This is on a 2002 Heritage Softail & a 2003 Heritage Softail Trike conversion...same temp on both.

Every time I hear a dealership making that statement I remember the years they, Harley, told use to NEVER run synthetic oil. That is until they got their own brand then it's okay. I call BS. Have run Amsoil in my in my bikes for years and never had a problem. Have put my kick stand down in all 48, the 4 corners, the high and the low, on Amsoil.

Just bought a 2013 Tri-Glide. Going to get a few miles on it then head to Sturgis (27th yr). Taking with me 5 qts Amsoil 20w-50, a qt of 75w-110 Severe Gear for the tranny and a qt of Super Shifter for the primary. Going to get the fellows at that church on Junction St. (where they change your fluids for free) to change all my fluids before I head home.

I'm late to respond and thank everyone for their input on this but do appreciate every ones thoughts. I ended up deciding to use the 60 wt. My thoughts were that there was going to be a lot of long interstate speed miles and very few cold start heat cycles on this trip. Road 840 miles Tuesday on the trip up, then finished the trip Wednesday morning, about 300 miles more. Only problem was a upper motor mount bracket bolt came out somewhere along the route. Noticed it at a fuel stop, so GPS'ed Ace hardware, there was one 60 miles up the road so went and bought the bolt and a stack of washers to replace the spacer that fell out with the bolt. Put them in in the parking lot and rolled on. Came home Monday, 1140 miles and no issues except for the constant rain the last 200 miles :(. All together 2652 miles. Only 28.5 MPG average and I rode with the cruise set at 71 MPH. I do have my speedometer corrected using the Power Vision tuner to match my GPS indicated speed. It was off 14%, setting was 2206 and its now 2518, so speedometer indicated 71 would be 81 on a not corrected stock speedometer. I'll see if I can find some Redline 20/60 for this oil change as it does sound like the best of both worlds. If I can't find any today I'll go with the Amsoil 20/50.

Thanks everyone...........

I asked the idiots at 4 Harley dealerships about Amsoil syn 20x50w and they told me the same exact thing, I would blow it up if I used that junk. they told me if Harley thought Amsoil was any good they would have it in their bikes from the factory. I then asked them , how come when you look up comparisons on syn. oil Amsoil is always on top and Harley syn. is usually down near the bottom of all oils tested? they all must go to the same school for idiots and are brainwashed when they get out. I am not saying Harley syn. is no good, as I have never used it and probably never will as long as the testing of their oil remains where it is (low). that is just my $.02 worth, think about it.
