Reverse quit working for me a couple of days ago.

It is not the breaker, the reverse motor is secure, all wires that I can see and feel are tight.

When I push the reverse button I see the voltmeter drop, and hear a small click, but no other noise or action.

To further complicate things, out of the last 15 or so times I have tried it, it worked twice.

Any thoughts?

Be sure & manually trip the breaker with the red button on top, then reset the lever firmly sideways. Also check the cables connections. Check the voltage at the solenoid, & across the breaker terminals. Your voltage drop could be just the solenoid coil. If that don't work let the dealer solve the problem. That is what your warranty is for if you have any. If not raise a little hell about the problems with the infamous Harley reverse. There is an upgraded motor that they sent out to replace the failing motors. There have been motors replaced even after warranty. They have failed before...... It mostly depends on your dealer, or maybe you should call MOCO direct & complain to them about a piece of junk.

Yeah, I've manual tripped it and reset it half a dozen times.

Stopped at 3 different dealers going thru Canada, no one has a clue and I don't want to wait a day or two in my trip while they may or may not figure it out.

In the meantime I am being careful where I park, and if I can't get it working before getting home, will let my dealer at home sort it out.

sounds like the motor from what you are decribing..Hard to troubleshoot from a computer too..Unless you can locate a volt meter and check the input and output voltage at the breaker..
Have fun on the trip and enjoy the ride for now..

I agree, sounds like something with the motor. I'd avoid messing with it anymore while on a trip unless I have a desire to become stranded for several days in a town I only wanted to pass through.

I think my motor went out this weekend. I had it replaced once in 2011.When did the upgraded one come out. I have the extended warranty or is this something that should be changed on their dime.

Let the extended warranty foot that expensive bill.

Sounds like the same problem I had. Dealer first said it was the clip that held the gear on, wrong. Then he said it was the solenoid relay, wrong. Then he finally said the motor, right. All of this took him 2 weeks because he had to order each part each time. I am an electrical engineer and told him in the beginning it was the motor. So he kept the bike for two weeks trying all his crazy troubleshooting methods instead of checking the motor. They ended up putting a used motor from a trike that had been traded in. It was the same year bike at least and has worked now for over a year.

Problem was in the beginning it would work sometimes and then just kept getting worse until it would not work at all.

Mine quit working today .Checked it out motor is bad took it to dealer they agreed motor is bad . New upgraded motor on the way. dealer said my motor had vent that allowed water to enter motor. upgraded motor has vent tube to prevent water from entering it. warranty covered $1500.00 problem.

Hmmm, well with what we have been riding thru, would not surprise me if MUD was in there!

I have been careful with my parking and will get it to the dealer after we return.

Finally got around to taking the TG into the Dealer today. It is the motor. They have a new one on order. When it comes in I will take the TG back in for them to install it under the extended warranty.

They also found that one of the heim joints on the panhard rod was bad. HD does not sell just the heim joints, so am getting the entire panhard rod replaced under the extended warranty.

Why can't these reverse motors be rebuilt ?

No doubt you can do just that. Harley does. In fact I would bet there are other motors that would work in it's place. Probably one with more power. Seems odd that no one has offered an after market motor, IMPROVED !
A lot less than $1300-$1400 !

The weird thing is that after I had all my initial problems with reverse on my '10 TG, they replaced switch, breaker and motor with a stronger one.I haven't had a problem in years. I would have thought all newer bikes had that beefier stuff initially. Maybe they are using up old stock and hoping for the best.
