Anyone else?

Keep up posted Rex ,:clapping: get that thing going may have to go find Asian up in Oklahoma .:D

Sorry.

Has not been a lot going on here so I have not posted either.

I guess I will post up my scattered pile of parts.

This is the upside down and backwards trans.

Normal 1 and 2.

Later style 1.26 3rd from us gear.

0.82 4th from rancho.

3.44 ring and pinion from rancho.

Welded on syncros.

Splined shafts.

Billit side plates

8 bolt carrier.

4 spider

Shortened axle

Disc brake conversion.

It is coming apart to check out any issues.

It has been gronking into 4th. Got to check the bearing adapter and nut at the end of the shaft by 4th. The Splined shafts are not supposed to fit a swing so it has adapters to match the different bearing sizes. My adapters leave no place for the lock tab washers. I suspect a loosened nut. I may have to tack weld the nut.

Drive extension.

The bearing in this runs on grease from a remote nipple.

Gotta check that too.

Feels fine from the outside.

I have not torn these down yet.

My pile is large enough already

Stainless steel rockers.

Did not go with the pistol shapes just did not seem to go with my style.

Fork legs did not come out as expected.

Would not stay straight enough for me.

Here they are in the scrap bin.

Already took three hands and the "pucker method" to stay with it to start with.
I call myself putting enough duration on the cam that I soften up the bottom end. So maybe just normal putt around riding it won't even be on the cam at all.
Putt around sub 3500 at an off the cam 50hp. Then twist on it and in comes the cam at 200 hp all the way to 7500rpm.
The old motor came on pretty low and was "twitchy" to ride sometimes. Fun but scary at times in traffic. I have had a few panic "get on the brake- get the front on the ground- before I run into someone" moments.

The 94mm Mahle cyl and piston kit.

_3_zpsw0xx4upd.jpeg

This and the 86mm crank on the other page.

2387cc.

Gonna have a lot of shim under the cyl to get deck height. Crunching the numbers I get almost a quarter inch of shim. Probably have to make a custom spacer to go with the long stroke long rod combo.

I am curious about the process of building a front engine VW trike. It seems I've heard it takes two tranaxles, one flipped upside down as yours is. I have old transaxles around and who knows, maybe someday I would attempt a front engine build. Looks interesting. Thanks.

It takes internal machine work inside the case to make it oil.

Rancho will build you an inverted. They are the only ones I know of.

I have full access to a machine shop. So it does not bother me to do heavy modifications.

The normal way to do it is to pull the ring and carrier out one side of the case and stick it in the other. All then is shimming the backlash. No machine work.

I flipped the entire trans to make mine much lower than the car would be.

If you use a full width irs you could squat it down fairly low. If you narrow it then no.

If you want to run a swing then no again.

Bad ass trike company sells frames and drive components for a normal set up.

But mine is 6 inches lower than normal.....lol

This is what it looked like before I took it apart.

Drain plug is 3-1/2" off the ground unloaded.

Definitely one of the meanest looking trikes around. I don't have access to a machine shop so is it possible to do this without machine work? Uh oh, looks like I may be researching another project.

Machine work is a must going inverted.
If you don't have access to a shop then do it with money. Call rancho transaxle.

Best bet is do not invert.
Just move the ring to the other side and do the shim work. Then just live with it being 9+ inches off the ground.

Bad Ass Trikes company has (maybe had, it has been a while ) all the parts to do a normal (not inverted) trike.
Their drive components looked weak to me and I did not trust them. Probably ok for a 50hp stocker.
Mine is a hot rod. Old engine around 160hp.
New engine is going for 200hp. My trans has a lot of other mods inside it also.

How is you weld and fab skills and tools?

None of the vw suspension is usable on a mid.

You will have to buy (if you can find) or build yourself all the rear suspension.

A swing axle is easiest. The swing arms are much simpler than an irs would be.

Mine is a swing and is narrowed a lot.

A bad ass trike company kit build.

Pretty cool. Just not what I wanted.

ThumbUpAre you changing the front , thought I seen a set of rockers for a springer ?

I can weld and fab. I do have a swing axle as well as an 2 IRS trans. So if I didn't shorten the axles the stock suspension would work? The inversion is done just to get it lower? I'd want to keep the build as simple as possible being it would be the first try. I'd be using a stock motor so stock components should work. I just latched onto a good running Manx style dune buggy so of course my first thought is how to make it into trike. The front engine would be interesting project. I am just trying to determine if it would be something my skills could handle and cost would be a consideration also. I'll go to the websites and see whats up. Thanks.

I went to Bad Assed Trikes and I think maybe I am beginning to grasp the concept. The ring and carrier swap changes the rotation, the extra trans case is used to lengthen the trike, otherwise you'd be sitting on the engine. Stock suspension won't work as you said. Am I right so far? I'll do some more searching and see what I can find. Thanks.

Yep.
You got it.
They don't do inverted.
That is a Rex thing....lol.... i always hafta be different.

A swing axle can be squatted some. The wheels camber badly and drive bad.
Squatting a swing means the axle bearings have no oil at all. Pack them with grease and they will last a little while. The fulcrum plates will gall up if you go very far down the road with it.
Squatting an irs would work fine. Might could run slightly shorter axles.
I do not know of anyone that makes the suspension for an irs set up. You would probably have to build that one yourself.

Take all the inerds out of the irs and put in the swing case if it is a 12v case.
Or if not then put the swing side plates and carrier in the irs case. Run the axles straight no squat. It would be the easiest way to go. The swing arms would be simpler to build. And you could narrow it if you wanted.

ThumbUpAre you changing the front , thought I seen a set of rockers for a springer ?

Yep..
Making that stainless steel springer I have always talked about. Nothing long. Short and stocky as far as springer go. Going to a taller 90/90x19 tire and single disc. Thinner dirt bike tank and painting it.

Engine is getting fuel injection and distributer less. Bored and stroked some more. Bigger cam. Think I have a set of tri-y headers in my head that just may work.

Hey do you have a set of 1.4 ratio rockers? I could trade out my 1.25 ratio.
Crank hit the cam. Gotta get my lift with more ratio.

I found one that only looks like he used only one trans case. A lot simpler to build but sitting on the engine might be a little uncomfortable. Just kicking it around right now. I'll have to go out and rummage through my junk pile and see what kind of parts I have. Thanks.

I like the looks of that build VW driver ,,,don't know if I ever mentioned this I was borned in Tocoma ,,,wayyyyy back in 56 !!!!:AGGHH:

I want it back together by spring.
I have a lot to do though.
I have it in the chopper underground biker build off. Maybe that will keep me inspired to get to work on it.

There is not an exit off the trace at vicksburg.
But the trace is only a couple miles away from the house. We run up and down the trace between port Gibson and Ratliff ferry at the northern end of the reservoir.
