AIS Removal

That kit works on all Road * from 04 - 13. I kind of did mine last night by diconnecting the hoses from the AIS unit and connected the tubes using one of the hoses. The I just plugged the small hose. I'm going to fab a pair of block off plates either tomorrow or next weekend.
 
I dismantled the AIS system and made plates to cover the holes in the cylinders. Looks much better and I think it may be running a bit better but may just be my imagination.
 
Curiosity question for you (maybe very naïve on my part, I'm fuel injected):

Won't disabling the "smog pump" on your bikes eventually cause carbon build up in the catalytic converter? Or did you also remove the cat?

Don't you have to retune the carbs after disabling the AIS?

Just wondering.
 
The AIS just ignites the fuel that is unspent/unburnt that gets past combustion and into the Exhaust. It is highly suggested you change the OEM Exhaust and even then will cause more "Blackening " and discoloration on the Unit in the areas around the end of the Pipes. It does retard HP a tad but that very slight loss is negligible if the OEM Air-Fuel-Exhaust Systems are left intact.
Yepperz, it can lead (usually does) to, premature fouling and failure of the Cat. That's another reason to dump the OEM Assembly in favor of a better more efficient and beneficial after-Market one.
Disabling the AIS does not require a re-jet or re-tune. Be a waste of time and effort if that is the only thing changed.
Changing the Exhaust doesn't "require" re-jetting of the Carbs but is a good thing to do to maximize effects on the HP/TQ and Powertrain efficiency.
If you change the Air Induction System (Hypercharger etc.) in conjunction with the Exhaust, then you had better re-jet to match the changes or it is a BAD deal. Plus why go to all the trouble and expense to make those changes and not get full benefit of the Power gain to be had :Shrug:
Simply disabling the AIS on its own without changing the Air-Fuel-Exhaust Systems and equation is pretty much a waste of time and only changes Sound. All bark with little to Zero bite.
Of course doing all that will take from the MPG but them again, those Mods aren't done for or intended to increase Fuel efficiency and economy anyways.
 
In my case, an '05 carbed, no cat to worry about. I am looking at replacing the exhaust somewhere down the road. A lot of folks that remove the AIS on the RS do so to eliminate backfiring under decelleration. During the coming week I'm removing the tubes and fabbing up block off plates. I did mine mainly for asthetics. I also plan on relocating my fuel pump to underneath the right side cover, also for asthetics. And just for the hey, and a bit louder exhaust note, I'm doing a stage 1 exhaust mod. Gotta do something while it's supposed to rain much of the week.
 
Disabling or removing the AIS may prevent the backfire but you will have high pitched "popping" in its place on abrupt decel. Kinda like a fast fire-cracker. Properly matching the Air, Jet, and Exhaust (with a good tuned baffle like a BCT) Systems will de-emphasize that but not eliminate it.
