    Default New trailer for Elvira

Well I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a trailer to haul Elvira.

2016 Diamond Cargo 7x12 tandem axle.
16" O.C. floor cross members and side members
    4" tube frame
    225-75-15 D rated radials
60" extended tongue (for towing behind the motor home)
    All LED lighting
BTW, this pic is of a in stock trailer and does not include some of my options

Not at all, I am in Texas and the Texas trailer manufacturers would not get within $1800.00 of this price built to the specs I want. They want to do cookie cutter trailers, not built to spec

It is being built in So. Georgia. About 850 miles from me.

My Lady and I will make a road trip out of it and spend the weekend in New Orleans.

I am looking at enclosed trailers, now. Don't want to spend a ton of money on something that won't get used all that much. Since my tow vehicle is a Toyota Tacoma Crewcab with 4.0 V6 & 5spd auto w/tow package,an 8x20 trailer is out of the question so I'm looking at a V-Nose 6x10 or 6x12,either single or tandem axle. Maybe I can find something decent for around $3K or less.

Clint - I think you'd be happier with a 7 ft. wide trailer {just my opinion}- and I'm sure you know that the drop axle is the way to go. The problem we all have with the trikes is not just the width, but that the shorter the trailer the shorter the ramp.

Nice trailer! Yep Georgia and Indiana are the places to go for trailer deals. I bought a brand new 8.5x20 for my move from illinois to AZ. Picked it up for 4785. Upgraded to 16" oc floor joists, LED lighting and radial tires. Sold it when I got here for 5k.

My next trailer will have a ramp rear door,JC. Most trailers are 6' tall, regardless of length.
If I can get a 7' width for a good price,I would consider it.

I stopped at a trailer dealer to look at something to haul my trike in. The dealer made me aware of something to watch. Check the width between the cables that hold the ramp door. They are narrower than the width of the door. The 6' wide one I looked at was slightly over 5' between those cables. You would probably need a 7' to clear your fenders.

Clint, I have a 6x10 v-nose Bravo. I pull it with a Ford Ranger 4x4 (4.0 V6, auto). I pulled it with my Switchback just fine. I have not pulled it with the Tri yet but expect it will work ok. Standard height is 6ft but mine is 5.5ft. I have loaded the Tri and strapped it down to E tracks in the floor and a Condor chuck up front. It is tight but will work. I have a lift on the Tri and it clears the rear ramp about 2 inches. The 7 ft width would be easier to tie down, but would be too much trailer for my truck. I have about 3" side clearance on each side at the rear door. I have a side door (near the front) for tie down access up there. It has torschen bar suspension and drop down rear jacks (for loading with the trailer not hooked to the truck). Good luck with your search.
    It is what it is.

I have a 6X12 v nose, 6 1/2 tall, dropped axles, brakes on both axles, rear ramp and side door. E track and front wheel chock. I insulated the trailer and built cabinets in the v nose. Rear adjustable supports. 1710lbs empty. Super easy to pull loaded or unloaded. The trike fits in with ease, just have to be straight with the door upon entering. Pull with a chevy 5.3 pickup. The 6 1/2 ft tall makes a lot of difference with length of ramp door and plenty of inside head room. No bottom out issues. Eagle Creek Continental Cargo. Bought new in 2007, 3,500$$$. Same trailer today is around 4,500$$$. When I was living in the motorhome, I kept my Ultra Classic and Dyna along with my garage related items. Jim

Clint...IMO a tandem axle is the only answer with a safety factor. With a single axle your trailer will weigh 1400 to 1600 Lb's, add your trike at about 1200 to 1300 lbs. that gives you a total weight of 2600 to 2900 Lb's. The single axle will have a max payload of 3500 Lb's and that includes the trailer weight. The tandem will have a max payload of 7000 Lb's

    at 2600 Lb's that's 75% of max payload of a single axle
    at 2900 Lb's that's 83% of max payload of a single axle

They tell me my trailer will weigh appx 1850 Lb's and my trike weighs 1275 Lb's
    at 3125 Lb's that's 45% of max payload of a tandem axle

A lot of my riding is in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and you know what our summer temp's can get too. IMO pulling a trailer in 100+ Degree temp's, is too risky to be in 75 to 83% max payload range carrying a $30K to $40K toy

Another side of this coin is that I sometimes WAY over think things and can be very anal about stuff like this.

BTW...my opinion and $5 will get you a large coffee at Starbucks

Best trailer I ever owned was a 7x14 ProLite. It had tandem axle w/ torsion bar suspension, aluminum frame, and fiberglass body w/rounded corners. Empty weight was only 970lbs and it pulled like a dream behind a 1/2 ton truck.

My first preference will probably be a V-Nose 6x12 or 7x12 w/tandem axle. However,I'm going to look over a V-Nose 6x10,today. The price is right at $2,250. Want to do some measuring on the door opening, actual inside width, etc. Those numbers will give me a good baseline of whether I'm going to need something bigger or not. Don't want to overload my Tacoma.

    Default Why

I have to ask, why a trailer, you can ride anywhere with a trike....thought that was what they are for. The best touring motorcycle there is.

I too used to feel the same, trailers are for boats!
But as I have aged I understand that some riders can't ride all day without discomforts, some passengers can't do it either, for them a trailer makes good sense and judgement. Some riders take a motorhome or pull a 5th wheel and stay for extended times at one location and pull a trailer so they have their home and bike with them. Some just want to trailer to Bike week, Sturgis etc and use the trailer for a garage.
i have a 6X10 V nose and the TG just does fit, tight but doable. I use it when I need to take bike to shop, or when I was working and had to attend a week or two training or conference....I also use it at home for storage, snow blower, power washer etc....

I have a 6 x 10 inclosed trailer that was bought to haul Sportster behind motorhome , now with Freewheeler it works great but there is only 4" on each side at door opening. Bought new from Trailers Plus, really great construction.
