Like the title says gear ratio for 88 goldwing 1500 interstate because I am triking it and using a 7.5 ford rear end so I will need to know what gears to use and tire size if anyone can help me. And is there a formula to figure this our?

from the the 1989 service manual, there would be no difference between 88 and 89.

primary 1.592
secondary 0.971
1st 2.667
2nd 1.722
3rd 1.273
4th 0.964
5th 0.759
final drive 2.883

Primary Reduction: 1.592
Secondary Reduction: 0.971
Gear Ratio, 1st 2.667
2nd 1.722
3rd 1.273
4th 0.964
5th 0.759
Final Reduction 2.883

gear ratio

If I had a manual or could get a decent one I wouldn't be asking and I was asking to see if anyone else has used the 7.5 ford rear and pick their brain on rearend gears and tire size to try. But thanks for your reply.

Sorry guess I misunderstood what you wanted. If you need a formula for calculating the tire size you will need for the Ford you have to be close try googling it. Google knows everything, the font of all wisdom.

He just stated the GL1500 gear ratios and cited the source .......

Our GL1500 based Lehman Trike has a 3.08:1 Ford rear gear and uses 215/70-15 rear tires. It came with 245/60-15 tires, near same diameter. Some other trikes I know of have lower ratios like 2.93:1 in the rear axle (maybe not Ford) but use shorter rear tires as well ..... like 215/60-15. If you end up with the engine running 100 or 200 rpm faster at 60-65 mph, that's OK as it just means overall you have slightly more torque multiplication and that'll make it easier for it to pull the added weight of a trike kit plus spin up two large rear flywheels you call "rear tires".

There's always a formula.

Here's a pic of my speedometer / tachometer .... 64 mph is about 3050 rpm in 5th gear with 1/2 worn 215/70-15 rear tires and 3.08 rear gear.

Dcryder, My gl1100 homebuilt trike has the 7.5 Mustang rear end with disc brakes. I started out with a 2.73 ratio, On takeoff the high gear just did not have enough get go, Well I changed it to a 3.43, Well that was way to low,5grand at 60 mph,[I had this in stock]. I finally went with a 3.08 and am very happy with it. just my 2 cents worth. Charlie
