trip to northern Idaho and a meet with fellow member Trent M.

I took a trip into Northern Idaho for an aunts celebration of life last week with my cousin Darrell, I had contacted Trent before hand to meet on the way back.

He came up from Meridian and met us along the road at Banks, ID. for breakfast at a riverside lodge and he, Darrell and I overstuffed ourselves with chicken fried steak and eggs (Trent's treat, and I thank you Trent).

We went up Highway 21 where they had just opened the road after the massive wildfire that's still burning ripped through devastating a one of my favorite rides and Trent left us at a junction where he was going to make a circle back home through Idaho city, but before we got to spend some time together.

I can tell you it was a real pleasure for Darrell and I to meet up with Trent, He and I have been talking back and forth on this forum for the past four years and it proves we have good folks here.
I had sprung a leak on the primary drive system on my old Harley tour glide trike and my plan was that if it were to to bad I would have headed back to the Boise area with Trent and fix it at either his place or a cousins place in Boise.

I decided to go on adding oil about every 100 miles and made it back to Pocatello to my moms place where I spent the next three days rounding up tools and parts to pull my primary drive system and replace the starter seal.

I was directed to some real great people at Pocatello cycle who helped me out with parts at good prices so I didn't have to spend to much at the Harley shop there.
I found some biker folks running a really busy auto repair shop with a sign hanging in there shop saying " prayers and repairs" who lent me the use of a drill press, torch and grinder to make a bar to set between my clutch and compensator gears so I could remove and reinstall them. They even lent me a 1/2 torque wrench as there is 100 lbs on the compensator and 50 on the clutch. (there is even greater torque on the newer models)
I didn't have my motor manual with me so I was able to refresh my memory on torque values at poky cycle with their manual.

All in all it was an interesting trip to say the least!

I hate doing major work on the road but, well, Shit happens when you ride an old Harley, Glad I didn't have to pay to have someone else do the work and worry about what corners they cut?
I am the type of guy that chases threads and uses new bolts, pays attention to torque vales etc.. during repairs, Just a hang up of mine I guess?

Well for some reason I cant edit my own post so you will have to interpret my meaning?
Don't know what's up with that?

Glad you got everything fixed up proper Paul, I enjoyed the pics, beautiful country.

It was great to meet up with Paul and Darrel. Great guys.. Paul and I have mutual friends and have been shootin' the breeze on here and emails for some years so it was good to meet him in person finally. And I still do not know if he is a Republican or a Democrap which is a testament to his Bull sh***ing abilities. :D

That fire has devastated some of the prettiest country in our state. Still not under control, has burned about 125,000 acres.. 2,500 firefighters working on it. They don't plan on getting it under control till we get some decent rain sometime at the end of September. I have photos that I took that day and later when I had to go up there for work. I cannot post photos for some reason. If ya' all are interested in seeing them, If someone will give me an email, I will send them to be posted. Glad ya made it home ok Paul..!

Its the internet sometimes things don't come out the way we thought they would oh well. Looks like you had a great time with great people. Can't ask for more than that. Throw in some unplanned repairs makes it even more satisfying. Its what makes a trip an adventure! They're what we recall years later with fondness, some great memories overcoming problems.

Glad to have met you Trent!
Tell me more about the easy clutch you have, Would it fit my old scooter?

I don't remember talking politics at all, Did we? I don't usually do so on a random basis.
Normally only when I think I can get someone flustered, such as my brother in law.
He's pretty easy to bait! :Coffee:

well I finally got down to the problem with my primary loosing oil? ( the fix didn't fix it)

The seal in the crankcase is bad and instead of dumping the engine oil into the primary like its supposed to, the seal is in backward and oil is entering the engine.

I have a suspicion when this engine was designed it was meant for a dry clutch?

The engine is a 1994 model and was bought by a Harley dealer in Milwaukie to build a chopper and was never installed in anything.

So it's another journey with wrenches and bleeding hands to remove the entire primary to get at and replace that seal.

FUN,FUN, FUN, I just love working on primary drives!

I may want to change the primary drive gear in my 1989 tourglide.

The gear may be riveted on this model and Harley Davidson makes a $400.00 tool for the job,

The gear runs about $75.00.

An after market hub is $357.00.

Who has one of these riveters to do the job, preferably near Wyoming but could ship it?
