enclosing my trailer for winter traveling

My wife and I upgraded from a fifth wheel toy hauler this fall to a Class A diesel pusher motorhome which created a dilemma for transporting the trike south with us to Texas this winter. We ultimately want to transport the trike and a small car also but don't want to make a hasty decision on how we will do that. I have a 6 x 10 aluminum trailer that we haul the trike on from time to time and used it three years ago to haul the trike on a winter trip to Arizona. I just don't want to go through the work of wrapping it up any more. I've got a picture of what that looked like.

I decided to add 4' high walls to the trailer and build in a mounting bracket setup to allow us to haul our little trike trailer along so we can use it for multi-day outings away from the campground.

The trailer sides have slots in them for inserting tie-down brackets so I did some experimenting and as able to modify some 1/2" flange nuts to slide into the slots so I could mount my 3/4" x 60" square tubing without having to drill holes in the aluminum side panels.

Will post additional pics soon.

Mounting the little trailer required a bit of disassembly to make it small enough to clear the trike safely. I removed box and tires first. I needed some way to protect the fenders on the trailer when positioning it on it's side inside the trailer. I took a couple of 6 x 6 blocks about 8" long and drilled a large hole for the hub to go into and then 4 smaller holes for the lug bolts. This lifted the fender about 2 inches off the bed which was perfect. I added some D-rings and eye bolts to attach ratchet straps to for securing the trailer. This part of the project is now complete.

The next part of the project is to use some 1/2" metal conduit to make bows for the top and drop the ends into the six square tubes on each side. A local tarp maker is going to be tasked with creating a fitted tarp to put on it. I am planning on painting the plywood a color to closely match the tan on the motorhome.

Here's some pictures of the trailer mounted in the side.

I have a friend that winters in coastal texas who has a class A and tows a cargo trailer with a chest freezer in the nose, than a Jeep with a g wing behind that. Turns it into a shop when he gets there.
Hope your going back to Medina Highpoint. We will there 2/15- 3/15

John,
We are planning on Medina High Point again. I got to mayo in Rochester this next week for a PET scan and Dr. appointments and what we find out there will hopefully give us a good idea when we can go and for how long. We are tentatively hoping to go around the week before Christmas for 2-3 months. Sure hope we can overlap our time there to get to meet and do some exploring together.

Finally had time to do some more finish work on the trailer. Got the sides painted two tone and now to work on the arched tubes for the top. Possible start on that tomorrow. One of these days it'll get done.

before we get to the hills, we head to the ocean, not for the rides but for the sun and fishing. If you need more destinations, check out I.B. Magee country park, Port Aransas TX $450 mo. on the ocean!
