Bike shut off on a corner and displayed tip?

Hi all, my newly converted 2016 Slim S cut off while taking a corner aggressively and displayed tip. From what I have read it is the bank angle sensor thinking the bike tipped over. This appears it would be a common problem for conversions but searching this site doesn't come up with much conversation surrounding the issue. Any suggestions on a fix would be greatly appreciated. I plan on calling the dealer Monday to see what they do for the tri glides and free wheeler but I'm sure they will want to sell me something when maybe it can just be disabled.

Only happened once on my 2007 RoadKing conversion. And I was really overly aggressive to make it happen. Never did again. Reset my turning the power switch on and off 5 times. Don't know about the new slim. Dealer might have an answer for you.

I have only seen two instances where the BAS triggered a shutdown on a Harley-Davidson. I have done a number of (well over 150 Harley's) TRIKE installations and never had a problem.

I did find this on the google search though ....

On 2006 and later Harley-Davidson’s equipped with a sidecar or TRIKE CONVERSION, the security system must be reconfigured from the default solo vehicle setting to the sidecar/trike setting.
If the sidecar is later removed from the vehicle, the security system must be reconfigured from the sidecar setting to the solo vehicle setting. Sidecars and Trikes must always have the Bank Angle Sensor installed.
If a sidecar/trike is added to the vehicle at a later date, the security system must be reconfigured from the solo vehicle setting to the sidecar setting and will require installation of the Bank Angle Sensor Switch Kit.

There is also a way to jump the wiring at the BAS to kill it's input.

Hey Jim, thanks for the information. When it talks about it must have the Bank Angle Sensor installed, are they talking about one different from what's already on the bike? Also, would you know how to jump the wiring at the BAS.

How many wires and what colors go the BAS ???

I saw an article on google that addressed killing the BAS but I can't find it now.

I'll keep looking.................:good:

Freewheeler bank angle sensor

My freewheeler shut down and left me stranded in a bad area of town. Kept showing tilt on the readout. The dealership determined the bank angle sensor was faulty and replaced it under warranty, so they do fail. Was kind of relieved it wasn't something I'd done. Haven't had a problem since.

Since your bike has the can-bus diagnostic system, as I understand it, it'll require having a secondary bank angle sensor tied into the system so that your local HD shop can "set" it to trike mode which will disable the BAS. Since your bike was originally a 2 wheeler you can't alter the BAS that's already in the bike which is why it needs a secondary BAS to do so.

I may be dead wrong as to the "why", but that's as I understand it.

Thanks for the information and I believe you may be correct. I will find out tomorrow when the dealer opens and let everyone know.

Update: From above responses and my own research on the Harley Service web site it appears I need to have the bank angle sensor reprogrammed to side car enabled. When this is done the engine should only cut off on a roll over instead of just taking a corner aggressively. This is scheduled for next Wednesday and will update when I take it back out on some twisties.

UPDATE: I took the trike to Carolina Coast HD in Wilmington and they reprogrammed my existing bank angle sensor to trike mode using their digital technician. Awesome dealer BTW and did this for no charge. This took care of the problem. I took it on the same road where I was able to trip the sensor 3 times and even when pushing it harder it never tripped. This is a great feeling knowing my trike will never gain cut off again when taking a corner aggressively. One thing to note is my little security light stays lit on my dashboard now. The security system still works as before but the light stays on after reprogrammed. I confirmed with another out of State dealer, who has done this numerous times, that this always happens and they have never been able to figure out why. Oh well, for me it is a small price to pay and could care less.

Hey Pat, I'm glad you found it useful. My bike is a 2016 also so yours should be doable. My local dealer had no idea what I was talking about until I printed a few pages from the HD service website talking about this. Once they hooked up the digital technician to the bank angle sensor it only took them a few minutes. They didn't find any option for a side car enabled but did find a trike option. Well worth having it done because it sucks having to corner conservatively knowing it will trip on you otherwise.

Love your trike. Do you have any pictures?

Having same issue on 2015 Roadglide with newly installed Voyager Trike Kit. Took it to Harley based on what I found online about changing BAS setting. They claim they did it and it threw error codes so they set back to original settings and said there is nothing they can do. Very frustrating after spending money on kit to have the bike keep turning off
