A few pics of where I started and the point currently at.

Donor axle from 77 chev wagon, cleaning up the lumps n bumps, axle cut down and kinda sorta fixtured for welding. Welded cleaned up and primer-ed with acid etch primer and the frame attach plates. Getting started on the frame, the double U-joint is the cut down drive shaft.

All this over a too much else to do packed year.

Hey Fred

Kinda homebrew approach. Picked up a six foot 1 inch threaded rod with nuts and washers at the local screw and fastener place. A neighbor with a wood lathe turned up a set of maple hardwood inserts with a 1 inch hole centered to replace the bearing races. 3/4 inch ply for the outside crush plate as seen in the pic. The same neighbor is a plumber and let me use a pipe cutter
to score cut marks at the decided upon spots which were a visual guide for the hacksaw work. This was followed up with judicious use of a hand file and machinist square to true up the facing surfaces. 4 1/2 inch hand held grinder to bevel the joints leaving right about 1/8 in mating surface. Plugged it all together using the threaded rod and (only one showing in pics) two vice grips
on each side to keep them registered inline to tighten the rod down way tight.
Used a big ass propane blow torch to warm the housing up to about 500 f then (one side at a time) tacked the front and back of the joint, hit it with the blow torch again for a moment pulled the other vise grip and tacked the top and bottom. Hit it with the blow torch again then proceed with a two pass weld front/back then top/bottom in sequence. Snugged the nuts down some then did the other side. Left it all snugged up until it had cooled

Once cool the welds were ground flush, a 2 inch long chunk (per side) of cold rolled tubing was split in half, centered and clamped over the weld. Warmed everything up one side at a time and welded the tubing as extra insurance.
