Default Will not start in gear

I was stranded at a store on yesterday because the trike did not start as usual. I park in first gear with the parking brake applied. When I got ready to go, I squeezed the clutch lever and put my right foot on the rear brake pedal as usual; but the bike would not start. I pulled the 50 amp fuse and clean it due to minor corrosion, but that was not the problem.

After putting the bike in neutral, it started. This was the first time I had this problem. Is there anything (i.e. switch) that I can check without going to the dealer?

The owner's manual states that the bike should crank when the clutch is released and the brake is applied. In the past, I did not have to find neutral to start the engine.

    Thank you,

While in gear with out the clutch pulled, it should not crank. After replacing my hand grips i found that more pressure was needed to engauge the switch. Adjusting the clutch cable solved the problem. The new grips are larger than the OEM ones . 📞

If u have a hydraulic clutch there is no adjustment to help, however the right side switches are ALL in one now, if that clutch switch has gone south u may need a new switch half?

Yup, kill the cruise and cause the starter to malfunction too

The new can bus sytems are way different than any thing we have seen before

The 18 models have finally moved the passing lamp switch to the ls handlebar switch pak where it belongs IMO long over due

HD is trying, nut making it harder to work on unless you do a diagnostic first and see if a part number shows up in the odometer window

The newer bikes check each system seperately now I like this

What I forgot ... cold or hot engine?

Don't laugh, but my breaklightswitch made the problems only if hot, after about 40 miles of riding

    No one is laughing

The HD engines have been known in the past to have wierd unexplained heat related issues

If I had a dime 4 every EVO bike that quit running or ran funny when hot GEEEZ

The ignition pick up inside the timer plate yup on the RS of the bike Right by the rear brake light switch on some models would heat up and open up( BANG NO ignition)

So we can learn that electricity is a VERY funny animal and does what it wants when it wants

I've had the same problem with my '14 TG a couple of times. Each time it was fixed by replacement of the brake switch.

Welcome to Trike-Talk- Mike ......Are you pressing hard on the brake pedal, Clutch pulled all the to the grip......Then hit the start button not before...

Also do you have the stock grips, Some after market grips are too thick and wont engage the clutch start switch......

Have you tried using the hand brake lever ? I have not tried with the foot brake but my 16 always starts in gear with clutch & brake levers pulled.

Thanks. I think I tried all that but next time it fails I'll try pressing harder on the brake and see.

I just remembered something that occurred on my 2011 related to this subject.

I have leather lever covers on my front brake and clutch levers. If I did not pull the clutch all the way in, hard enough to compress the leather sleeve on the lever, the switch would not trigger, not allowing the starter to engage.

Similar issue to having over-sized grips.

That will cause the no-start....Also if i put my adjustable clutch lever on the #1 [closest to the grip] setting that will cause the no-start..

Ok, so mine failed to start in gear again just a bit ago. I tried all the suggestions about pressing hard on the brake, pulling hard on the clutch lever and made sure I was doing every thing in the right sequence. While I was sitting there thinking I pulled in on the clutch lever and let it slip off the tip of my fingers and snap back. Tried again and it started. It seems mine must be in the clutch switch. When it's working right I don't have to apply extra pressure on anything.

I found my problem. I took the cover off the left side switch. Four little screws hold that switch in place. The top right side screw, the hole in the little bracket was broken off. So the top right is not held in snuggly and doesn't always activate the switch.

ETA: Thunder Creek in Chattanooga said they would fix under warranty even though I traded at Smoky Mountain in Maryville which is 70 some miles away.

    Good on you

NOW throw some white lithium grease in the lever @ the perch when u pull the clutch in, this will help the action @ the pivot just a bit

Where # 13 (bushing goes thru the lever)

    Default clutch switch

my 2017 TG would not start in gear even with the clutch pulled in and brake applied.

    it was a bad switch.

only 2900 miles so it was replaced under warrantee.

    now no problem
